Since analyzing certain aspects of the Mario & Luigi RPG series is a common trope today I think now is a better time than ever to discuss and or analyze how Joke’s End is the true climax to Superstar Saga as a whole.
Let’s just start off by saying that the name in itself is a HUGE piece of symbolism. The name “Joke’s End” is spelling it out as clearly as it possibly can, that the jokes end here. No more fun, no more jokes. This is no longer a game and what happens to the denizens of this kingdom and the world is entirely up to you. Everything you know and love is at stake and you can’t afford to make a slip up. Now does this mean that absolutely all signs of comedy disappear for the entire rest of the game? No of course not! This game was purposely made out to be a big joke with the whole game pretty much revolving around beans and laughter, but that still doesn’t change the fact that the fate of the entire world rests on you shoulders. One little tip of the iceberg and the whole thing could collapse, pun VERY MUCH intended. Speaking of icebergs...
Let’s talk about the location. It’s not just a coincidence that the place is practically isolated at the top right corner of your screen, oh no. There’s a reason people don’t go there and it’s very clearly stated that it’s were jokes come to die.
“A crypt for cruddy jokes”. Yes it does say cruddy jokes, but jokes are jokes regardless. It’s also the ONLY area in the game that’s cold and gives a harsh sense of foreboding pushed onto you unlike the entirety of the rest of the map which is filled to the brim with warm and very tropical areas. The very nature of Joke’s End helps to emphasize the fact that this very well could be the end of everything that you’ve come to know and love. The music and the actions of the characters placed there help to emphasize this as well.
You know how Lavender Town’s theme is only a few chords played on a loop and yet somehow it’s still eerie enough to make your arm hair stand on end? “Hold the Corny Jokes, Please!” Is the exact same way. The simple repetition of the instruments that sound like bones and ice shattering like glass followed up by the icy ambience sets the place up so well that it slaps you in the face 10 fold just to make sure that you know this place stands out from the others. It’s unlike anything you’ve experienced beforehand.
There are various little actions that set of red blinking lights for the turn of the story, but I want to talk about the main one that I find particularly makes the sirens blare louder. You all know him, most of you love him, give it up for Fawful! You already know that he’s a huge goofball for the most part and mostly anyone wouldn’t expect it to be any other way, but you know what we didn’t expect? For him to be the one to see through that fake Beanstar ruse. Yeah, him of all people. The one that’s supposed to be the getup of this whole charade, pretty much fries and scrambles Luigi’s brains before taking the real Beanstar and leaving. If that doesn’t seem a bit out of place for that specific character then I don’t know what is. He goes from a carefree goof of a villain to a serious and deadly force to be reckoned with. The symbolism of Joke’s End is backed up so well that even the setting of it says that this is the true turning point of the game.
