Hello, tumblr, it's been too long! Over three years, in fact! It's not that I haven't been spriting; in fact, I have. This is just a side-project for that and due to me translating things that aren't Pokemon into Pokemon, it takes a lot more mental effort than translating Pokemon into Pokemon. Also, seeing a good in for translating something without making it a big stretch (which, dgmw, are still entertaining to see, just not to do.) Anyhoo, good to be back! These four sprites are for the Mt. Lavalava boss fight. The ones on the right represent the two forms of the Lava Buds and the ones on the right represent the Lava Piranha. If this would be in a Pokemon game, I would imagine it being a gym leader with 6 Pokemon (two each of the Lava Buds). They would face you in a triple battle with the Lava Piranha in the center position. As you took out a Pokemon, it'd be replaced with the appropriate fiery version. I would make the base forms Grass-type and the fiery forms Grass/Fire-type. Even though you'd have access to (at least) 8 Pokemon by this point in the game, if you had less than 6 (less than 3, maybe?) Pokemon, you'd get a Kolorado for this fight.
Onto the sprites! I am remiss not to be able to have the vine spikes on these, but I think finding suitable source for them would prove futile. Each of these has rocks and lava from Diglett and Slugma, and bells colored from Parasect and Absol. The vines are all colored from Tropius. I left the Diglett and Slugma parts uncolored because I felt they would be suitable setting elements and not crucial to the Pokemon's design.
The Lava Buds have Bellsprout as a base. The unlit one has leaves from Oddish (colored with Tropius) and the lit one has flames (unrecolored) from Slugma.
Lava Piranha uses Weepinbell as a base. They both use vines from Victreebel and Ferrothorn, and have teeth from Mawile. The lit one gets its tongue from Lickitung and its flames from Moltres. I felt that the Slugma flames were more appropriate for the sprite-based effect for the Lava Buds, but that Moltres's were more appropriate for the in-game effect of the Piranha's.
These were a lot of fun to make and mull over and figure out solutions to problems. At one point, I wanted normal Lava Piranha to have Whiscash lips, but I couldn't make it work. I tried using kissy lips for when it uses its flame breath attack, but none are big enough. Either way, I hope you guys enjoy these!
I wasn't happy with the Lava Piranha sprites. They just felt too... wobbly. I was honestly too fixated on using the Bellsprout line.
The head is a Cradily with Whiscash lips. The stalk is Cradily until it becomes Dragonair. The thorns come from Ferroseed. The lava still comes from Slugma, and the flames still come from Moltres (though different). Diglett rocks were too small, so this one uses Dugtrio.
Hopefully I was right and these newer versions are better!
Glurp from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake.
I had so much fun doing the Lava Piranha that I figured I should do another Mario RPG sprite. I thought trying another Paper Mario sprite would be limiting, so I took a look at the only other Mario RPG I've beaten and picked out the one that thought would be the easiest to translate [for an easy transition ;)] Glurp it is! Glurps are such cuties and interesting enemies for how far into the game they are, all the while creating a weird sense of danger.
I initially thought Grimer would be the base for this sprite, but it turned out that Ditto had a better shape for what I wanted to do. From the ground up, we have Loudred's mouth, Duskull's eyes, and Combee's antennae. Vaporeon provides an excellent blue for this guy, and Jolteon does the eyes. In a strange twist, the last part done was coloring the inside of the mouth- palette provided by Grimer.

Pokemon spriters, where do you get your sprites? My old resource dried up.
I’m not good at these types of things, so I’m just going to say
Nice.
And more importantly, thank you; each and every one of you. We’ve been at this for a few years, and I’m sure we’ll be at it for a few more. And while we’re here, why not join the Discord? It’s the best place to let me know which Pokemon you want to see done next, as well as the best place to give me some really good ideas! https://discord.gg/S4tESCz
