«"... But is there anything better on earth than that we should love one another?"» (from Phase Sixth: At Christminster Again, Chapter III) ~ #JustFinished: Jude the Obscure by #ThomasHardy My rating: 9/10 ~ Well, this is probably the dreariest novel I've ever read. It is still amazing, though. It caused controversy at its time, which is no surprise, as he harshly criticizes a bigoted, rigid, hypocritical society against natural freedom. But, because of all the reaction, he, unfortunately, stopped writing novels. Besides, this novel greatly proves what a great intellectual Hardy was, displaying his knowledge of scientific developments known in his age, especially Social Darwinism by which he shaped his novel, as well as his knowledge of philosophy, literature and classical history. If not for the unecessarily repetitive parts in it, I would definitely rate it 10/10. ~ *may contain spoilers* (1) This novel might as well have been named "Jude the Ill-Omened", or "Jude the Unlucky". His story, which is from his childhood to his age of thirty, is full of disappointments, failures and his being a victim of his instincts. How he, inspired by the schoolmaster Mr. Richard Phillotson, always wants to study in university at Christminster but ends up being a stonemason, and once being diverted to clergy, still not giving up his dreams, is really heartbreaking. Besides, the idea of determinism plays an important role, again, like in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, intertwined with Social Darwinism, and as a social animal who can't fulfill what society requires, Jude cannot survive. These laws also leave impacts on other characters, especially Jude's cousin, Sue Bridehead, who is one of the most important characters in the history of literature in my opinion, by whom, Hardy deconstructed the woman image which had been reflected in literature by his time. ~ «"She's never found peace since she left his arms, and never will again till she's as he is now!"» (from Phase Sixth: At Christminster Again, Chapter XI) ~ #bookreview #JudeTheObscure #Jude #JudeFawley #SueBridehead #ArabellaDonn #MrPhillotson #RichardPhillotson #LittleFatherTime #Christminster #book #books #bookstagram #novel https://www.instagram.com/p/BtNSBNsHBDT/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1j9h5e7j3hmuz
