Been thinking about a world that's lifetimes away.
Where a Suli caravan decided to camp and perform at somewhere near a farm.
Kaz Rietveld, 17 year old, went to the performance with his older brother and their father.
The girl from the Suli family met eyes with him as she was flying from one hoop to another.
Half a second. Merely a heartbeat. But he's certain he saw a smile, she even laughed a little.
It's clear as daylight that this farm boy has never seen a trapeze before.
Inej would think to herself. Trying to explain why she'd smile at a random boy in the crowd.
Yet it felt natural. It felt familiar.
Almost like they had found eachother, in a lifetime before.

this but it's inej who wishes she didn't love kaz quite so much, because she knows that no matter how deeply she cares for him, he still can't free himself from his past or believe that he deserves a future—or happiness—with her.
Kanej on the brain like some sort of disease...
Kazzle Dazzle Brekker and Inej Ghafa
It becomes a routine on Inej's late nights, coming down to the lobby at nine bells to talk with her. They're occasionally interrupted by guests arriving late—a delayed coach or a missed gondel—or by others coming back from the opera or theater instead of going for a fashionable late supper afterwards, but it's mostly just the two of them, with Willem an indifferent chaperone in his corner by door.
It's comfortable, these nights. Like throwing a ball with Jordie when they were kids, an easy back-and-forth. Inej asks Kaz about his travels across Kerch, and her eyes light up when he describes the rocky coastline of the north and the music floating over the Belendt conservatory's walls. She tells him about Ravka, its deep forests and Sirkuzoi mountains, which have snow at their peaks even in midsummer. She likes his Da's stories about selkies and goblins, and teaches Kaz about the Sulis' Clever Hare, who always outwits Fox and Wolf. Chapter 10 of Numberless Crowded Streets is up on AO3!
Inej:Surveillance is 90% boredom and 10% "oh my God, he's picking his nose in public." Kaz:..You mean me? Inej: If you were picking nose around, I would take a picture and hang it over all the beds.
