I have been really enjoying the challenge of Jesse Enkamp’s “Karate Flexibility and Mobility” exercises, which I recently purchased a couple weeks ago. They’ve been a great addition to my daily stretch routine and I’m super glad Jesse (one of my “karate heroes” that I’ve been following online since 2012) has put out something like this for the karate community; it’s exactly what’s needed and what I’ve been looking for. Back in 2014, when I had a brief stint as an after-school martial arts instructor at United For Success Academy in East Oakland (6th - 8th grade), I remember the girl’s soccer coach telling me that one thing he noticed among a lot of professional/elite-level athletes was that they were all very flexible. I don’t know if there’s any research evidence out there to support this claim, but this is certainly something I’ve noticed to be true, not only for Sensei Enkamp, but also for people like my recent taiko instructor and world-class performer, Yuta Kato, at Los Angeles Taiko Institute. One student described him as being very “rubbery” while playing which is a quality you can see in Jesse’s video. While the desire to increase my own range of motion and flexibility has more to do with improving my physical health overall rather than being an elite athlete, I can certainly see how this is super important for arts that require bodily expression. Your body is the instrument; the more agile you are, the more notes you can play, the more amazing the music.
