“When will I see you again?”
The question was the same one you had been asking yourself. You knew Caius was as impatient as you were.
“It’s been three months.”
The follow-up text made you shake your head.
“You’ll see me in a few hours.”
You replied before glancing up at the back of your brother’s head. Garrett seemed totally clueless as he obnoxiously made some horrid version of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off” that was even making Kate shake her head.
If Garrett knew about your relationship….it would be ugly! Garrett already hated the thought of you dating anyone, but when that anyone was Caius, it would be worse. There were also Kate and Tanya. Both of your new “sisters” hated The Volturi and everything that they stood for. Neither had forgotten what Caius did to Irina.
“Yes, but we have to act as if we do not know each other. I’m not patient, and this is getting old.”
You sighed as your phone buzzed again. Caius was most definitely not a patient person. In fact, he was one of the most impatient vampires that you had ever known. He thought hiding the relationship from the beginning was a stupid waste of time but finally gave in when you wouldn’t agree to be with him.
For the better part of a year, you had been trying to think of ways to explain yourself to your family.
“We have been seeing each other since the showdown over Renesmee. We saw each other across that field. I used my telepathy, and it was just like that. He didn’t know what hit him.”
No matter how you said it in your mind, you couldn’t make it come out in a better and more…caring fashion. You also knew no matter how you said it, Garrett wouldn’t accept it.
Meeting Garrett’s eyes for a second, you glanced back to your phone.
“Or we could just rip the bandage off and tell everyone? There are enough people here if a fight breaks out, someone will have the sense to stop it…hopefully.”
“I’m not worried about a fight. I like fights.”
You turned the phone's screen off at that.
“What’s with you? You have been awfully grumpy.”
Garrett commented. Kate gave you a gentle smile.
“Sorry. I couldn’t hear myself thinking with you slaughtering Taylor Swift.”
Garrett’s mouth dropped.
“You know you loved it.”
“I would rather listen to a cat hacking up a hairball.”
Tanya and Kate chuckled at that. They had gotten used to enjoying the sometimes-mean banter between Garrett and you.
“See what I mean? Grumpy.”
Garrett muttered, smirking. He knew that you were hiding something. The only problem was that he couldn’t put his finger on it. You had been a lot more secretive lately. After the two of you being a brother/sister team for so long, he could read most of your expressions without you ever saying a word.
“So what are we doing exactly?”
You asked, hoping to change the subject. Garrett rolled his eyes.
“Apparently, the morons from Italy are back to nosing into Renesmee again. Apparently, Aro still thinks they are screwing with him. Aro needs to get a hobby.”
Kate’s scowl intensified.
“They have caused us enough issues.”
There it is. That right there was the reason you hadn’t said a word about your relationship. The venom in Kate’s voice was enough to make you not want to consider it.
You didn’t blame her, though. Irina being killed in front of everyone was traumatic. It didn’t matter if she was the cause for all of the trouble or not. Seeing someone you cared about being killed was never a “walk in the park.”
“Sounds like a great time for everyone.”
Pulling into the Cullens’ drive, Garrett met your eyes again and nodded. His attention turned to Kate and Tanya.
“I suppose this is where we act civil to the Italian ass clowns?”
Kate squeezed Garrett’s hand.
“As much as I want to go in there and cause them as much misery as they have caused me…starting a war isn’t a smart idea. We simply go in and be of whatever assistance the Cullens need.”
Tanya only nodded while you reached for the door handle.
“Might as well get this over with.”
You stepped out of the car and stood beside Garrett. He reached down for Kate’s hand and threw his spare arm around your shoulder.
“Be nice.”
He commented with a smirk. You rolled your eyes.
“I’ll play nice if they do.”
You replied. You had all intentions of being nice because you were probably going to cause a lot more chaos than what was probably going on at the moment.
“Hey, look who it is!”
Emmett’s loud voice pulled you from your thoughts. He stood at the doorway with a huge smile on his face before coming outside.
“I’m glad you all showed up. Those jokers showed up at 7 am. It's been a day sitting here listening to Aro blabber on and on while the other two glare at us. The least they could do is say something remotely amusing. Blondie looks like he wants to burn the world down."
Garrett rolled his eyes.
“I have a feeling that is probably what happens most of the time in Italy. Aro is blabbering, and the other two are plotting ways to off themselves. Shame they haven’t succeeded by now.”
You internally winced at the comment as Emmett laughed.
“That would be too simple. Come on in. Y/n, nice to see you. Want to fight me later?”
You immediately shook your head. Emmett always found your “ready to fight” attitude amusing.
“I would rather put my hand into a cage with a wild honey badger. You could kill me with one punch. I saw what you did to Alec in Alice’s vision. I like myself too much.”
Emmett chuckled, throwing his arm around your shoulder.
“He deserved it. Come on. Let's go stare at these ass clowns."
The moment you stepped in, your eyes immediately met Caius’. He immediately glared at how Emmett had his arm around your shoulder. What business did the overgrown Cullen brat have in touching you that way? He didn't need to be touching you, period.
“Y/n, you remember these jokers.”
“Watch your tone.”
Caius immediately snapped. Aro gave Caius a look that said “stop” before getting up and holding out his hand.
“I’ll give you a dollar if you can read my mind.”
You stated before shoving your hand in his. It never stopped amusing you at how annoyed Aro appeared when you used your telepathy to kick him right back into his own mind.
“Look, I get to keep my dollar.”
You murmured as Aro let go of your hand.
“I see your telepathy has gotten better.”
He commented as you sat down beside Garrett. Your brother gave you an amused smirk.
“Yeah, I’ve got skills. You don’t have to look so disappointed. So, are we all just going to sit here and stare at each other? That sure sounds like a lot of fun.”
You said, ignoring the way that Caius was staring at you. Jane was the next to stand up.
“Do you want to fight?”
You shrugged.
“Sure, go outside and practice falling down. I’ll be out there in a minute.”
“That’s enough.”
Caius said again. He had gotten used to your sass. That, however, didn’t mean that he enjoyed it all of the time. He turned his attention back to your eyes as you leaned back in your seat. Caius knew that he was about to wipe that arrogant smirk right off your face.
“Are you ripping the bandage off or am I?”
He thought, giving you a cocky smirk. You made sure no one else was watching the two of you having a telepathic conversation.
“I swear if you just blurt it out right now, they will both kill us.”
“No one is killing us.”
Neither Caius nor yourself noticed Garrett watching closely. He had noticed how Caius’ eyes were locked on you and how you were staring right back, clearly communicating with him. He elbowed Kate in the side until she looked at what her lover was currently so pressed over. Her eyes immediately widened before muttering “oh no.”
“He better not be what she’s been hiding. I’m open to most things but not him.”
Kate glanced between Caius and yourself again. Both of you were now looking in other directions.
“You won’t like any man that she falls in love with.”
Garrett nodded in agreement. No man was good enough for his little sister. You were too good for any bum that came along. You were most definitely too good for any member of the Volturi.
“No. I’m going to take her aside in a second and just say no, then I’m killing him. She isn’t about to be living in Dracula’s castle playing house with him.”
Kate wrapped her hand around Garrett’s.
“Let’s just see what happens before you try to kill him and start a war.”
“I’ll start a war over my sister. If he is the one man, out of all of the men on planet earth, that she chooses...I will fight a war."
Garrett grumbled before going back to watching you carefully. He couldn’t help but fuss mentally about how Caius had no business bothering with you. What similarities did either of you have? Garrett couldn’t name one.
Over the next hour, you had become aware that Garrett was looking between Caius and yourself.
“Why does your creep of a brother keep looking at me?”
Caius asked as his eyes met yours again. Glancing back at Garrett, you pretended to look out the window.
“Garrett isn’t stupid. He’s probably putting things together. We have been practically eye fucking each other this whole time.”
“I would rather fuck you the traditional way.”
It took all of your willpower not to laugh at that one. Caius smirked, turning his attention back to Aro, muttering something.
Turning your attention to Esme, you needed to think of any reason to get out of the living room.
“I love what you have done with your garden.”
Esme smiled, clearly happy someone noticed.
“I’m surprised I have kept my flowers alive this long. Luckily, they don’t need a lot of sunshine.”
“We should go look at them.”
You said quickly. Esme was up and held out a hand. Garrett was busy listening to a story Emmett was in the middle of about a fight. Shaking your head, you knew he was looking for any reason to clue Aro in that he didn’t mind taking all of The Volturi on.
Your eyes met Caius’ again before following Esme outside. For the next half an hour, you stood listening to Esme talk about her flowers and not killing them. You were thankful that she quickly started tending to her flowers about the time Caius stepped out.
“I’ll be right back, Esme”
You commented. Esme only nodded as you followed Caius to a secluded part of the porch.
“Took you long enough.”
You said with a smirk. Caius glanced over his shoulder. He really wasn’t in the mood to deal with Garrett at the moment. Something told him that it would be happening sooner than expected.
“I’m still waiting to rip that bandage off.”
He replied as you stepped closer.
“Yeah? You tell them first.”
“After you, princess.”
You rolled your eyes. Maybe it was best to drop the bomb and prepare for the fallout. Either way, it wasn’t going to be pretty.
“Okay…”
You turned to head back inside but stopped the moment Caius wrapped a hand around your wrist.
“Hold on. I’ve waited three months.”
He quickly pulled you back against him. The two of you stared at each other for a moment before you wrapped your arms around his neck.
“And to think that you didn’t like physical contact in the beginning
Caius chuckled.
“Silly me.”
He murmured before leaning down to kiss you. Closing your eyes, you pushed a little closer, tightening your hold on his body to deepen the kiss. Three months had been too long. While neither of you had said “I love you” there were definitely feelings there.
“You’ve got to be kidding me!”
You immediately let go of Caius the moment Garrett’s voice totally ruined the moment. Turning, you kept yourself in front of Caius. You weren’t sure who would attack who, if given the opportunity
“Garrett…”
You started, but he immediately stopped you.
“Absolutely not. This isn’t happening! In no universe is this acceptable.”
“It’s happening. Whether you accept it or not is your responsibility.”
Caius said in his typical cold monotone voice. Garrett just stared at him as if he was trying to decide if this was actually happening.
“What’s going on?”
Kate asked the moment she stepped out with Tanya and Carlisle behind him. You wasn’t 100% when Aro and Marcus turned up but they looked equally as surprised too.
Garrett immediately started pointing wildly.
“I was fucking right, Kate. They were kissing! He’s the slutty friend that we were worried about!”
Kate and Tanya’s mouths dropped while Aro immediately started to talk but stopped both times.
Caius raised an eyebrow at Garrett’s slutty friend comment.
“If you call me that again, I will throw you into another dimension."
You reached behind you, squeezing his hand. With your free hand, you reached out and held Garrett in place. You silently thanked whatever deity decided to give you telepathy and telekinesis as a gift.
“I should kill you for touching her! Let me go, Y/n! Stop protecting him!”
Garrett snapped as Caius gently started to move you out of the way. You quickly moved right back. As long as you were between them, neither would be able to attack the other.
“No one is killing anyone.”
You snapped. Aro finally remembered he could speak and decided to come in.
“Caius, is all of this true? How long?”
Caius sighed. If he wanted to rip the bandage off, this was it.
“A year…maybe a little more.”
Kate and Tanya’s mouths dropped again.
“He killed Irina.”
Tanya managed to choke out. Caius again rolled his eyes.
“It was her own fault.”
Kate started to move forward, but Garrett grabbed her. It was a miracle that he didn’t get shocked in the process.
“We’ve had enough dealings with you to do a lifetime. Let her go.”
Kate said her rage was intensifying by the second. Caius didn’t seem at all worried.
“I’m not holding her hostage. She made her choice as I made mine. The lot of you can accept it…or don’t. Either way, I don’t care.”
Garrett started to say something but gave up on speaking. He decided that he was going to fuck up Caius’ perfect face once and for all.
Carlisle quickly came out of nowhere and pulled Garrett into the house. You stood listening to the sounds of your brother shouting random obscenities until the door closed. Tanya and Kate stood a moment longer before going inside as well. They had to find some way to process what just happened.
Aro and Marcus were the only ones who remained. The two stood staring once again. Caius sighed.
“What?”
Aro shrugged.
“Now I know why you wouldn’t come near me and started smiling more. We will go inside and try to stop a war from breaking out. Should the two of you disappear, it would make sense.”
Caius waited until the two of you were alone before speaking again.
“That went exactly as I expected. Your brother called me a slut. I’ve been called worse.”
You had to stop yourself from giggling before turning to face him.
“I’m sure he’s calling both of us worse now. If he knew exactly what we have been doing, we would be more than sluts. As much as I want to go in there and deal with your brother, perhaps we should take Aro’s advice and disappear for a bit.”
Maybe disappearing was best? Garrett wouldn’t calm down anytime soon. You hated the idea of just dipping out, but in this situation, it was probably best. Caius reached for your hand, disturbing your thoughts.
“You’re coming back to Volterra with me. I’m sick of hiding. We can give your brother time to come to terms with the fact that you have moved on with your life. Alec?”
You hadn’t noticed Alec hiding in the corner.
“Yes?”
“You can tell Garrett where Y/n has gone. If he wants to fight about it, I’ll be on Volterra waiting for him.”
