I'm actually very curious about what is the evidence AGAINST the people in Kai and Nya's village helping them out as they grew up 👀🤔 That has always been my headcanon but I never noticed if there was anything canonical that could support it

I'm basing this off memory so I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they both mention being entirely alone after losing their parents. Anytime we see them in the village, either returning home or in flashbacks, theyre alone. They've never mentioned anyone who took care of them. I believe Nya mentioned that whenever she tries to picture her father she just sees Kai, but I could be totally off base in that.

I dont think theres any hard evidence either way, but it certainly seems to be implied that they only ever had each other. Maybe some people in the village helped with things like education and possibly cooking, things like that, but when it came to actually raising the siblings, that fell squarely on Kai. It would certainly explain why Kai is so desperate to be The Protector and why Nya is independent to a fault, and why neither of them can fathom or stomach asking for help even if they need it.

Top 5 Fire Emblem Archers/Snipers

This is based on how they are as characters, not units. Although I use them all as units too because I am the kind of player who coddles my faves until they become great (I thought Alcryst was a killer overpowered unit but it turns out I just had Tiki on him for the first half of the game!!!)

Innes (Sacred Stones): Look, Innes is a Mess. He's a gay mess with an inferiority complex and a terrible haircut and I love him. I also need to replay the game to make sure I'm not straying too far from canon in my love for him, but it is my head canon that despite having it in him to be an asshole a little prickly, he's a damn good ruler with a strong sense of justice and a strategic mind who cares deeply for the people he does care about (and also he is super uncomfortable with touch and was in love with Ephraim who was in love with Lyon but only learns to love himself when he spends time with Gerik [and Tethys] because they don't treat him like a king but just as Innes! This is definitely a fic I want to write but mostly compose in my head when I'm falling asleep). I love Innes. He weirdly reminds me of Seto Kaiba, who is also a beautiful mess but less competent than Innes.

Shinon (Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn): Like Innes, Shinon is also a MESS who pushes people away because he's afraid to love and be loved because he thinks he's unworthy of it and tbh Shinon probably things being an asshole is just fun. Unlike Innes, Shinon has the most perfect hair of any character in a Fire Emblem game ever. If I could have his hair tomorrow, I would. Shinon is racist to laguz which is super fucked up BUT it's part of his supports and growth to slowly begin to change (not enough, but the slow pace makes it more realistic character development) and no one who likes Shinon just thinks Shinon is 150% a great person, no flaws. They like him because he is flawed and loves exactly three (3) people in the world (Greil, Gatrie, Rolf) and it's extremely clear despite his best efforts to hide it. (If you wanna read a Shinon/Gatrie fic where Shinon is a mess and a half here's my shameless self-promotion!!!)

Alcryst (Engage): Alcryst, my baby!!! Alcryst is also a Mess but not in the same way. He's got the self-confidence of a sea slug despite actually being pretty good at everything??? He's talented, he's devoted, he's cute, he's funny. People love Alcryst! Alcryst just has no idea why. I do think that Alcryst's self-deprecation is so intense as to be frustrating at times, but the gradual development through supports is really nice and it provides a great baseline for head canon and fins and whatnot, because he's clearly got some growing to do and you REALLY WANT HIM TO DO IT. I work with middle schoolers and honestly the low self-esteem I see in some of the sweetest most amazing kids is very much reflected in the character of Alcryst and maybe that's part of the reason I care for him so much.

Fogado (Engage): I forgot Fogado has a bow as his base class and I'm mad at myself because I love Fogado!!! He's a great foil to the other archer characters because while they are all terrible messes, Fogado is from the most well-adjusted family in the series. He's also got a lovely mix of silliness and seriousness in his supports and character development, and I particularly love his supports with Alcryst. I'm sorry I forgot you for a second Fogado, it's only because you are so much more functional than what I think of when I think of archers!!!

Takumi (Fates): Takumi has a little of what I like from the other 3 archers, but not quite as fully as any of them. Like Innes and Shinon, he exists "in a state of moody malcontent" (has it in his wheelhouse to be a bit of an asshole). Like Alcryst, he has an intense inferiority complex related to his older brother. Like Shinon, he has amazing hair. Like all of them, he is also a bit of a Mess. It's been a minute since I played Fates, but I remember liking Takumi, if not loving him intensely like I do the others.

Honorable mention 1 to Claude (Three Houses): Claude would likely rank higher if I had played his route, which I will, but I haven't yet because I love sad boy Dimitri and I am still upset that he has to die in Claude's route. But Claude seems like a delightful character with a lovely mix of charm and humor and actual substance and backstory. He also gets a wyvern on promotion, and wyverns are my favorite units in Fire Emblem (and does that mean he's a wyvern unit with a bow??? That's ridiculous and I love it, he could just take out all the other flying units). Claude is a bright spot in a game with intense angst, and I do love that he's the only lord who manages to survive any route (I think). I don't know enough to say this with certainty, but it also seems that Claude is perhaps not a Mess or an asshole? Good for him, honestly. He does have good hair though.

Honorable mention 2 to Leon (Shadows of Valentia): I haven't finished this game yet (shameful, I know!!!), but Leon has gorgeous hair and is apparently canonically in love with his big lunk of a knight friend and we stan a canonically queer character and grumpy archer/cheerful knight pairings (see: Shinon/Gatrie).

I do notice that these are all male characters and I just want to name that dynamic. I think it's a combo of there being more dudes overall, some of the female archers not being super developed, and a general tendency in fandom that I am guilty of to center male characters, which I do want to note and investigate in myself! I didn't include Lyn because bows aren't included in her base class but I adore Lyn! And Neimi is cool - although I have mixed feelings about her main character trait being crying (crying is great and there's nothing wrong with it! But it's also a bit of a sexist stereotype), she and Colm are one of the few het ships I really enjoy. I also like that Louise (of Pent and Louise is just super functional) and is the physical unit who is bulkier than her mage husband.

i noticed listening to his voicelines that bald bull doesn’t really speak using colloquial language. and uses phrases that wouldnt really be used nowadays..? in other words, he speaks quite old-fashioned! because of this i headcanon that bull was raised by his grandparents! (i think his line ab his dad was a mistranslation because i cldnt find him talking abt a father figure for the LIFE of me. i think someone transcribed it wrong and then things got mixed up. but yeah bull is fatherless lmfao. what happened? idk i didnt think about it too much)

speaking of his family structure, wouldnt surprise me if he had siblings too. he gives middle child vibes. i think he’d have an older sister and a little brother

he speaks english the best out of the non-native english speaking boxers. i think he’s lived in america the longest (purely because of the amount of appearances he’s had in the franchise (but when speaking english i don’t think he’d use contractions eg saying ‘you are’ instead of ‘you’re’)

oh yeah also mask x is a persona he made to protect his identity and hide from the press but that backfired on him HARD

i know everyone n their mama has said this but he also has (undiagnosed) autism. he does pretty well w other sensory stuff like sound and texture, but he cannot STAND flashing lights. he gets extremely agitated when overstimulated, and that kinda helps him slip into his ‘bald bull’ character

another language tidbit, i don’t think he came up with the name ‘bald bull’ himself? because when he says it he says it in english rather than turkish. i think someone nicknamed him that when boxing and it kinda stuck

he’s very uhm. ‘isolated’ when it comes to relationships (idk how to describe it) but hes very paranoid when making friends because he worries the press will get on their asses to try and like get info abt bull?. he feels a bit more at ease talking to members of the wvba because they already have paparazzi swarming them as is. he also knows carmen from his arm wrestling days (this is expanding on the carmen is arm candy hc by @/boltun-tkn!!) but yeah they’re good friends :)
