Eric Birling character profile (GCSE)
Character Summary:
Eric is first shown to be a well mannered young man, with a slightly odd, nervous demeanour. Throughout the play he becomes more assertive and confident, but also does come to terms with his past actions and his drinking habit. He is the perfect portrayal of your stereotypical, upper class boy; someone who thinks that the world should be handed to them on a silver platter, regardless of how reckless they are. One of his saving graces is that he is on the more remorseful half of the Birling family and firmly sides with the Inspector. His parents both seem to have no idea about the events that have taken place that link Eric so directly to Eva Smith or any of his habits. This shows his anonymity towards his family, and his general disinterest in his father’s world (i.e: not showing any interest in business and insulting his father’s business partners).
"At first, I worried about if I should take part in the drama or not. I got advice from my manager hyungs and peers. The ultimate reason I decided to was because of the character Ki Bum. I heard the scriptwriter created the character with me in mind. It's a character that has a lot of me in it.” - Key, SHINee
Sheila Birling character profile (GCSE)
Character Summary:
Sheila Birling is initially pretty, pleased and content with her life. She later changes from this to have a far greater understanding of what’s actually going on around her and she start’s to take responsibility for the things she’s done, therefore making her not quite as pleased with life as she had been previously. Sheila is instantly compassionate towards Eva’s plight. Whereas their parents show a very upper class attitude of 'every man for himself’. In the end Shelia ends up taking on a lot more of the blame than she should, and with this we get to see how guilty Shelia actually feels about what she’s done, so guilty that she thinks herself to be one of the prime reasons for Eva’s death, even though it is clear that she is far from being the biggest contributor to what drove Eva to do what she did.
Gerald Croft character profile (GCSE)
Character Summary:
At the very start we see Gerald as someone who is eager to impress Arthur Birling and is very assured of his social and financial standings. He arguably had the largest impact on Eva, as he did have a long standing affair with her. But after her death, Gerald sits on the fence with where he stands in the morality her death. He realises that he and the Birling family, all drove this girl to the point she was at, and even when it’s proven that there is no girl he is far more willing to accept that he was still in the wrong by doing what he did with Daisy Renton, even when there was no death involved.
But Gerald is the one that began the theory of it being a hoax, which could be down to personal denial of having anything to do with the death of a girl he loved.
Eva Smith character profile (GCSE)
Character Summary:
Although we never meet Eva Smith/ Daisy Renton but we hear a lot about her. She is shown as a victim: an ordinary working class girl, ruined by all the other characters abusing their power and social status- exposing Priestly’s anger at the class divide. Eva is meant to be extremely pretty and attractive, but with strong morals and an honest attitude. She stood up to Mr Birling and asked for higher wages; however, she had no hope against a man of Mr Birling’s status- he could easily replace her. She was willing to stand up against injustice and be a voice of the working class. Priestly uses her to represent any person we meet in our live. The focus of the play is not on her, but on the way each character behaves towards other people. Even if Eva Smith and Daisy Renton were not the same person, and even if the Inspector had shown each character a different photograph, it is not important thing is that they all still did what they did.
"At first, my agency asked me what I wanted to do about my name. Although a lot of people change their names, I thought I wanted to bring everything I've done as SHINee's Key with me. Everything I've worked on is as SHINee's Key, so I didn't think I had to change that. People who call me Kibum call me Kibum anyway. I didn't feel it meant a lot to change it, and I thought it would be better to use a name that many people know me by.” - Key, SHINee
