failnumenorean & faileasterling who are somehow sauron’s best in slot
Sauron, The Witch King and Khamûl. The boyssssss.
We know so little of the Nazgul and their origins aside from a few details. The Witch King, whose name is lost, likely came from Numenor, a disciple of Zigur. He may have been a prince, influential lord or great war captain under Ar-Pharazon. Regardless, he held potential that made him useful to the dark lord.
Second in command and second most powerful of the Nazgul was Khamûl the Easterling. Shadow of Dol Guldur, a hunter who could scent the living like a wolf. He is the only other named Nazgul.
Booth figures are wrapped in mystery, both a cautionary tale of power, corruption an the loss of all things a mortal soul possesses.

🚨 First look at Khamûl and a Nazgûl in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 (via Empire Magazine)
[...] Or, as they’re known in The Rings Of Power, the Nazgnagôl. Here, they’re still men, working in service of Sauron and lusting for power. To figure out what this early iteration of the eventual Nazgûl would be, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay immersed themselves in Tolkien linguistics. “We love looking back at what inspired Tolkien,” Payne tells Empire. “He led with language. Language became a scaffold on which the myth would hang. The word ‘Nazgûl’ means ‘Ringwraith’ in the Black Speech of Mordor. But before they were Ringwraiths, we know that these were just men. So we were able to derive in the Black Speech that ‘nagôl’ could mean ‘servant’.” ‘Nazgnagôl’, therefore, literally means ‘Ring-servant’.
One such Ring-servant is Zubin Varla’s incoming Khamûl the Easterling, a character who we already know is doomed to eventual inhumanity. “In a sense, they go on the same journey as Gollum,” says Varla of the Nazgnagôl. “Evil begets evil, and violence begets violence. Their souls, and their bodies, are corrupted until they are literally hollowed out, almost devoid of physical form.”
Not that the Nazgnagôl would see themselves as the bad guys. “Every character stays the hero of their own story,” says Payne. “From Khamûl’s point of view, he is a warlord who deserves to be a king, whose power has been usurped by a dark wizard. Sauron offers him a way back to the top.” Remember: some ‘gifts’ are worth saying no to.”
started off as me redrawing some of my initial mairon designs and ended up going on an rpg tangent 😭 i really wish i could have done the portraits in a pixel art style to better fit the aesthetic but my canvas wasnt the right size!!! i ended up changing annatar completely (im still contemplating how much i prefer this one compared to his old one however...!) and adjusting post-numenor sauron a bit when compared to their old 2022 sketches! im probably gonna do more redraws in the months to come cause of all the stuff i wanna change when i look back to some of my old designs haha 😳
bonus: void delusions (nebula background designed by Freepik)
i like to think each 'form' sauron takes eventually has different mannerisms and likes/dislikes the longer he stays in them without shapeshifting into something else, but one thing they all have in common is being predisposed to nagging melkor 😎
Khamûl and Nazgnagôl help i'm so excited
