May 2019: Maiko Kikusana (Hanafusa Okiya) of Miyagawacho was finally promoted to a senior Maiko this month! She had her Misedashi on the 9th of May of 2016, so she has been around for almost 3 years, but she also debuted at the age of 15, so it makes sense that she was a junior for so long.

HOO boy.

I gotta say this is the highlight of my week. I was lucky enough to see Geiko Yoshika-san and Maiko Kikusana-san at Japan house in London, and my God they were absolutely stunning to see. Actually meeting them could’ve gone much better as my clutzy and frankly very awkward nature lead to me accidentally stepping on the tatami mat in my shoes, which put a bit of a dampener on the whole affair. BUT my goodness I’m incredibly lucky. I never thought I’d be able to see a performance like this outside of Japan, 10/10.

April 2019: Photos of maiko from Miyagawacho performing Himesanja at this year's Heian Jingu Reitaisai Hōno Buyō Matsuri.

Every year Miyagawacho sends 4-5 maiko to perform at this event. This year's line up was:

Chikasaya (千賀明) [Komaya Okiya]

Toshinami (とし菜実) [Komaya Okiya]

Kikusana (菊咲奈) [Hanafusa Okiya]

Fukukana (ふく香奈) [Kawayoshi Okiya]

Koaki (小晶) [Kaden Okiya]

February 2019: Maiko Kikusana (Hanafusa Okiya) of Miyagawacho performing Himesanja at the Yasaka Shrine during Setsubun.

Miyagawacho usually sends five Maiko in kuromontsuki to perform during Setsubun, but this year they sent four: Kikusana, Koen (Shigemori Okiya), Chikasome (Komaya Okiya) and Fukukana (Kawayoshi Okiya).

This year’s Kyō Odori poster has been released! It features one junior and one senior Maiko, Maiko Kikusana from the Hanafusa Okiya and Maiko Kanako from the Kawahisa Okiya.

The Kyō Odori is Miyagawacho’s annual spring dance performance. It runs from the 1st of April to the 3rd sunday of the month and there are four performances a day.
