rote is pretty classic straight-edge fantasy and it IS geared towards young adults but it doesn't have all the annoying hallmarks of YA slop and the books are genuinely quite dense so they're hardly ones that most teenagers would pick up just to read and have fun with imo. like rather than rote it's far easier to pick up and get immersed in like....soc. or acotar, probably. and afaik rote doesn't rly have any lgbt themes or characters like priory of the orange tree (or soc) does AND it's a very european-based setting with no real exploration outside of that so far, which can actually be a good thing because a lot of fantasy series by white writers can get really racist when they try to develop non-european fantasy cultures (like soc). not every writer is seth dickinson yknow

rote books lack the high-octane battle flair of brando sando, but that also means they're not so annoying and contradictory. they don't even attempt anything that will disappoint me when they turn back on their supposed themes - I still haven't been able to bring myself to listen to book 2 of mistborn I'm so pissed at the book 1 finale. and they're WAY more readable, personal, and manageable than jordan's insanely dense and tortuously extended wheel of time series despite wot having many female characters who are fighters

they also lack grrm's extremity, themes of abuses of power, and harsh critique of the monarchy, which does at times bore and frustrate me, but I won't complain about the lack of orientalism either

all that being said, they're very solid and well-made books so I'm kind of surprised I've never heard of them growing up. thank you mutual in laws <3 I am eating well
