Pretend you said “trick or treat!” And I handed you this

A scene from chapter 6 of @mysterycyclone’s Divergent Point: action shot edition! This is that thing I mentioned to you once and said I’d toootally finish. Ahaha.

I worked on this for a couple weeks in September 2024, and nothing since. But! Good Intentions! No guilt! Just because I stopped working on it doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve to be seen.

So, this is the scene where Peter kicks mind-controlled Superman in the jaw and through the ballroom window, initiating the fight. I believe this was my favorite chapter back then because I was so hungry for Peter’s identity to finally be revealed, and we get to see him beat up Superman?! It’s such an awesome chapter.

I used the description of the batsuit and utility belt from DM to design his suit:

Utility belt from Dark Matter that Nightwing gave to him: It’s blood red, and the buckle has the image of a spider across it; the legs are elongated and sharp

The bat suit from Dark Matter: At the end of the row, a sleek black and red suit with large, pronounced white eyes stands inside a clear glass case. A black belt is slung across the hips and matte black gauntlet web shooters are clamped around the suit’s forearms. The chest is covered by a thin, sharp angled spider emblem against a blood red chest, the black legs meshing with the black fabric of the arms and hips.

Peter’s mask expression is neutral as he’s focused on the fight, and because I thought squinty angry eyes would be a bit too on the nose. I put the bat symbol on his boot because you can’t tell me that Bruce could’ve restrained himself. He’s nothing if not fanatical about branding.

For coloring, Clark’s eyes would have been glowing blue as he’s being controlled by the mind stone. The plate glass would’ve been a light cream. I figured out way too late that this is happening MIDDAY, and proceeded to agonize about how I can’t do dramatic night lighting anymore. Creative liberty? Who is that?

Though it’s not finished it’s still awesome! And definitely the largest scale drawing I’ve ever done. Enjoy!

Week 5 | Mercs & Murder Husbands

Here’s the outline of the event for those interested. TLDR, This event celebrates relationship tags that have less than 30 works on ao3, both platonic and romantic. The rarest of rarepairs!

Inspired by Harley harassing interacting with Marc and Damian in chapter 20 of in labyrinths of reflections by @blackkatmagic, specifically these lines:

“Fuck the hell off,” he growls, and gets a hand on her face as she tries to kiss his mask. She’s wearing a lot of lipstick, and he'd rather not run around the rest of the night with a black lip-print on his face. 

and

Harley blinks at him, big eyes and blond pigtails and smeared makeup that makes her look like a raccoon with a hangover, and then laughs. 

Ho-ly-shit, I cannot begin to express how happy I am with this piece! Initially I was having a hard time with MK’s suit, to the point that I was contemplating just dropping the whole project. (I hate drawing superhero suits, why do I keep on doing this to myself) Like always, all it came down to was retaking my ref and utilizing that handy-dandy line of action, and I finished it pretty easily after that.

Damian was a last minute add-on, and I wanted to draw him on Marc’s right side and a head taller (kids are bigger than you think!) but I ran out of room on the page. I ran into the same problem with Harley’s mallet; I wanted it to be bigger, but with the angle it had to sit at to rest against her thigh, I kept it on the smaller side. 

This piece has made it very clear how limiting my sketchbooks’ size is. For example, I have an idea for another week in this event, but it literally wouldn't fit in this sketchbook so I’m not going to make it. Digital art 1: traditional, 0.

I tried out a new lining style as well, and I’m never going back. Before, I was making every line the same width, but it’s SO much more impactful with alternating line thickness! I attached the lined final sketch below. Do you see how much of a difference it makes?? (Written early May, so I've been using this style since.)

Details:

I think it’s silly that Harley’s boots are covered in blood, but not her actual weapon lol

Harley is as tall as she is because she’s standing on her toes in platform boots

The tattoo on Harley’s midsection is of ivy leaves (though, it’s not poison ivy) as a sort of homage to Ivy. Not that she’s dead or anything. They’re just. Lovers. So, tattoo.

I got to put NO WORK into shading the black parts of MK’s suit, and that was FABULOUS

I wanted to give her colored shoe laces, because I love small details like that. I would love to give characters any color of laces, but some of them seem to have negative meanings, especially on Doc Martens, so I went the safe route and gave her purple laces, which represents gay pride. Yes, I know she’s bisexual, but I felt like I didn’t have many options.

Week 2 | Who Run The World? (Girls!)

Inspired by @rags-n-bones' Along Came a Spider and @faeriekit‘s Quiet Respite, both of which handle Cass and Peters' characterization really well. They both write very interesting, and might I say very cool Cass POVs, and I enjoyed seeing the world through her eyes.

I waited a few days after lining on some light/medium brown markers coming in the mail that I was hoping to use for Cass’ skin tone, but alas, the actual colors were too dark, and their color swatches were lies. Boo. I may have blacked out while I colored, because I don’t know how I got it so dark, but Cass’ skin tone is comprised of the same markers I used for Peter's. Now that’s what I call drawing on a budget! Lots of layering, I guess.

Okay, now the most important part; what is their ship name? I’m teetering between Black Spider and Silent Spider. Otherwise we have like… Pete-ass, which is not flattering. Or Parker + Cain = Pain💪, which would be pretty accurate to their life stories.

Details:

Stretch marks on Peter’s thighs because I said so

(Peter doesn’t have an abnormally long torso, his boxers are just low on his hips)

Bruce is calling; Cass is so in trouble when he finds her cuddling with her boyfriend (not really, she’s his favorite)

Cass gets a lego Spidey keychain because I’m projecting; mine is on my keys

I made some touch ups when editing because I used a white gel pen to cover some lines on their faces I didn’t like, but that didn’t bode well with my markers when I started coloring.

Rose, Cass’ tank top is for you because you had Peter say to her, “Almost as powerful as you were wandering around in a tank top last weekend.” hehe

This was my initial idea; I was going to draw Cass with her head pillowed on Peter’s chest, and then Cass’ view, which would be Peter conked out with his mouth hanging open, but I didn’t really want to draw that angle.

Day 3 | Team Red |  Morality Differences | “The metal of the human spirit is forged upon the anvil of sorrow.”

This is my last piece for this years event, and I am SO beyond happy with it! Particularly the coloring on DPs and RHs suits.

The dialogue:

Red Hood nudging a groaning Deadpool who ate too much: “You guys are such losers.”

Spider-Man: “Says the guy who moved cities to join Team Red.”

Red Hood: “I did not. Believe it or don’t, but New York has job opportunities.”

Spider-Man: “For a theater kid like you? What, gonna audition for Matilda on Broadway?”

Red Hood: “Fuck you, if I did, I would get the lead role and win every Tony Award possible–”

Spider-Man: “Oh my god, you’re such a nerd–”

Daredevil: “Would you two shut up–”

Barbara is absolutely listening to this through Jason's helmet and snickering to herself, imagining him as Matilda, brown wig, red bow and all.

yes, Jason did spray paint "Batman Sucks." Midway through making this, I had another idea of this Team Red spray painting together. I don't know who, but they'd be slandering someone.

Things that could have been:

already-there simple graffiti art of original Team Red holding hands, but with a newly-added Red Hood at one end in a different color (all done by Deadpool)

as well as the food wrappers, they were going to be surrounded by obscure things they stole while fucking around the city: a Ouija board, some poor bastards steering wheel, Bucky's arm, maybe?

I was going to have them start stacking things on Deadpool, just to make them that much more irritating

Marvel/DC Crossover Week | 2024

Day 1 | Sidekicks | Family | “I won the fight before you even turned up.” - Batman

Boom! The two sidekicks of DC and Marvel, a wild Robin and a Bucky bonding over Alpine!

Initially I was going to have Bucky standing with his arms crossed, and Robin Dick doing the same with a puffed up chest next to him, mocking him like he might Batman, but I found I didn’t really care about that idea if there wasn’t dialogue, or any sort of relationship between the characters.

The second dialogue I wrote:

D: “We should arrange play dates for Alpine with Alfred.”

B: “Your grandpa? Why would we—“

D: “Tt. Not Pennyworth. My cat, Alfred, doesn’t have a companion. I think he may be… lonely.”

B: “You sure you’re not the one who wants to play with Alpine?”

D: “Ridiculous. Alfred wants to, not me. Though, I’d have to be here too. To supervise.”

Additionally, Damian was supposed to look more… victorious, that he was getting to pet Alpine, but I guess I put the eyebrow too high. Oh well. And instead of the Black Widow logo, I wanted Bucky to wear a Black Canary shirt, because I think he’d like her, but she didn’t really have a logo I liked.

Marvel/DC Crossover Week | 2024

Day 1 | Sidekicks | Family | “I won the fight before you even turned up.” - Batman

Fully inspired by Dick becoming Peter’s guardian in Dark Matter by @mysterycyclone , because that’s just adorable.

This was quite the adventure in learning how to make skin tones with just colored pencils… and by adventure, I mean I was dragged through the mud screaming. Why buy a brown marker, when you can randomly layer red, blue and yellow? Please, someone buy me a brown marker.

+ a sketch of Peter and (his uncle? weird) Damian lounging around the manor with Alfred and Titus. I was imagining they’re waiting for Alfred #1 to finish making pancakes.

Week 1 | “The Big Three,” Aliens, Androids Archers, & (Tech) Wizards

Here’s the outline of the event for those interested. TLDR, This event celebrates relationship tags that have less than 30 works on ao3, both platonic and romantic. The rarest of rarepairs!

This is Clint and Dick in Chapter 6: 16/17 for @acornsontheground's wonderful fic Winter Quarters. The feeling of this piece was Clint’s life going down a darker path, both of them helpless as they’re ripped away from each other. That's all I'm going to say, because I don't want to spoil too much for anyone who hasn't read it!

I used the details of Clint having blue-green eyes, freckles across his nose, and growing much taller and stronger when he was 16. Clint is wearing the dark purple sweater Dick’s mom made for him in chapter 4 when he was 15, and it’s gotten tighter on him as he’s gotten older! I used orange behind their hands, their only point of contact, because of the role the orange groves had in strengthening their bond. It also had the added bonus of looking like a beautiful pink sunset, which I’m not complaining about.

There was almost a Captain America logo on Dick's shirt, since Clint gifted him a comic run in chapter 4, but I didn't want to detract attention from their hands and the general gloominess of the piece. I still don't know why Dick's arm turned out more vibrant than his face, but this happens a lot; is it the camera angle? The lighting? Still something to learn.
