The Kippen:

Portable Hazel Wand of the Wending Way

In certain Cornish traditions, there is a small, portable wand used by practitioners called the Keppen Wand. This tradition ostensibly arose from a need for discretion (with some I've seen being less than half the size of this one,) and it seems that such implements were often made using local hedge trees. The name 'keppen', in turn, appears to derive from a mutation of the Middle English 'kepen', which translates as "to hold", "to keep", or "to preserve."

In my tradition of the Wending Way, there is a very similar, if slightly distinct, implement known as the Kippen. This word is similarly derived from the Middle English 'kepen,' though it is a word of its own that refers to a small stick or piece of kindling. In the context of my Craft, the Kippen serves as a portable link to the more central instrument of the Lāth, which is used for ritual empowerment, alignment, and evocation. As such, the Kippen allows me to maintain a connection to, and draw upon the power of, my Ceremonial trident while at a distance.

In order to establish this implicit connection, the Kippen must be harvested from the same tree as the Lathe was. Ideally, the limb is to be harvested under the same phase of moon, using the same blade, but as long as the same exact tree is sourced for both implements, the ritual link can be established utilizing a proper rite of tethering.

The resultant rod was harvested from the same Flying Hazel (which is to say, a hazel that grew on a Nurse Stump) that parented my Lathe, and it is carried with me in my bag when I'm on the go (just in case.)
