Why would they need them? Good question. The point is they have them.

So... I’m looking for advice.

I’m working out the details for a fic that I might write, some details of which I’ve posted about before. The basics are that it’s a genderbend of a melting pot of several different DC continuities.

What I’m having trouble with is Conner and Jon Kent’s Kryptonian names. Their human names were simple enough (Connie and Jonalyn “Jonnie” Kent), but I’m confused on the logistics of their Kryptonian names. Clark is Clara Kent, and her Kryptonian name is Kal Jor-El, but I’m not quite sure what the best course of action is for Connie and Jonnie would be. Kryptonian girls are typically named after their fathers (i.e. Kara Zor-El, because her father’s name is Zor-El), but Connie doesn’t have a father and Jonnie’s father is human.

So my thought was that they could modify Clara’s name (Kon Kal-El and Jon Kal-El). But then I had to wonder if, with Clark/Clara’s issues with Conner/Connie, would Clara want Connie to have her name, and would Connie want to take it? I’ve seen several people headcanon that Conner and Clark think of each other as brothers after they finally built up a relationship, in which case I could make Connie’s name Kon Jor-El.

I’m just not sure which would be best.

Edit: Thank you to everyone who replied! I decided to go with Kon Jor-El and Jon Kal-El and to write Connie and Clara as sisters instead of mother and daughter.

I'm watching Syfy's show Krypton and honestly I'm loving it but I'm really confused about how do the names work? Because I'd thought that women took their father's name (Kara Zor-El) and men didn't (Kal-El) but so far I've only seen women with names followed by their houses (Lyta-Zod, Nyssa-Vex)

I'm definitely not complaining bc it follows my headcanon of Krypton being an equal planet when it came to sexes and it's great but was this a fuck up from the show or was this on purpose? Or maybe it was like that in the past and the naming system changed along with Krypton?

the other hilarious side effect of the “Clark gives all of his closest friends and family Kryptonian names” thing is the admittedly unlikely but hilarious realization by one (1) Lex Luthor that Bruce Wayne has a personally-gifted Kryptonian name from Superman and not him.

Immediately adopting the 'Clark giving everyone true Kryptonian names' thing purely so that the next time Bruce decides to mess with Clark by calling him Kal, Clark is able to respond in kind. Especially in a situation where Bruce isn't even aware of the name and/or that it affects him the same way.

Exactly. Clark using that name impulsively/as a last resort to get Bruce to listen and he didn’t give him a heads up about how it would feel. Oh man. A feeling of someone reaching into your body and gripping you by the spine. Somehow it makes every cell in your body stand at attention.

Bruce never uses “Kal-El” flippantly ever again. Not that he did before, but he’s even more careful now.

What if we tie the 'Clark giving his friends Kryptonian names' and 'Fortress makes changes to Bruce + all the important people in Clark's life' ideas together and it turns out that the Fortess makes it so everyone who is assigned a Kryptonian name by Clark, feels the same instinct that Clark does when people refer to him as Kal.

Thank you for bringing this up, I was thinking about that true name thing again when writing that post. What's the point of a Kryptonian name if it doesn't grip you by the spine and shake a little every time someone says it out loud? People might think Clark flinches because it's a reminder of death or loss, or it's a name that sits uncomfortably, but actually it's a physiological response to hearing his full name spoken by someone with intent.
