Teochew Png Kueh (潮州饭粿) or poong tor, as it is called in Teochew, are savoury dumplings made to resemble peaches 🍑 as the fruit represents longevity in Chinese folklore. These kuehs are often sold in pink or white coloured skins made from glutinous rice flour. The colours are symbolic with the pink kuehs representing joy and are usually served as offerings to deities, while the white ones are for ancestor worship.
Png Kueh is a savoury dumpling which contains glutinous rice 🌾, peanuts 🥜, mushrooms 🍄🟫 and dried shrimps 🦐. While you can eat it freshly steamed as it is, it is often pan-fried until slightly brown and charred. This results in a lovely caramelized crisp skin, while the inner skin and filling remained soft and tender.
