We contain multitudes.
It just arrived this morning and it's so good fam like, yes, I'm only on page 47 but I can tell it's gonna be good. The letter format of the story reminds me of when Henry and Alex from "Red, White and Royal Blue" were writing to each other.
OH AND THE "Yours truly",,,
It was kind of a "shock"? No, I wouldn't say shock,,, surprise, maybe. That is a big fat flashback to rwrb, either Alex or Henry wrote that at the end of a letter and now it's stuck in my brain.
We Contain Multitudes.
I completed reading this book today and I liked it.
It's a love story between 2 boys who are paired by the English teacher to write letters to each other for a writing class assignment.
The friendship between Adam Karlansky and Jonathan Hopkirk develops little by little into love.
This book is much more than a love story. It also deals with bullying, homophobia, physical abuse and drugs.
I loved the writing and the writer's deep thoughts that has the power to evoke your emotions.
Kurl and Jo's love story was so cute and hot and had ups and downs.
There are some parts that I didn't like. Other than that it's a heartwarming, emotional and lovely book.
I liked so many quotes and the interpretation of Walt Whitman's poems. And I'm happy with the ending.
And Mark kurlansky is my favourite character.
I rate this book 4.8/5
We Contain Multitudes: Sarah Henstra
377 pages
Summary:
An exhilarating and emotional novel about the growing relationship between two teen boys, told through the letters they write to one another.
Jonathan Hopkirk and Adam "Kurl" Kurlansky are partnered in English class, writing letters to one another in a weekly pen pal assignment. With each letter, the two begin to develop a friendship that eventually grows into love. But with homophobia, bullying, and devastating family secrets, Jonathan and Kurl struggle to overcome their conflicts and hold onto their relationship...and each other.
Review:
I never thought that I'd get interested into a book that's told through letters. I'd assumed they would be told without in depth detail (because I love detail). However I was proven so ungodly wrong after reading this book! Kid you not I started reading it in a bookstore and continued to spend 6 hours finishing it because I couldn't buy it! The spirit, characteristics, and difference of both Adam and Johnathan in the book is shown so well because of the contrast that Henstra puts between each characters writing styles. I was left with so much surprise and heartache and love from start to finish and this is an absolute must read!
Just hanging out with my friend Krul.

Were the kurls inspired by Pearl from Steven Universe? If not, what inspired them? Also, where did that poi come from if there haven't been any around for so long?
The kurlitads are, much like the Atomic series, inspired by a song. “Pasa?“ by Pleasant Chemistry made me imagine a bunch of bouncy birds having a party in the trees, similar to those animated kiwi gifs that were popular one point in time. There’s no deeper thought to it. Eventually women’s voices start to sing random words -or sentences in a language I can’t understand- that sound like they’re saying “kurlitad“. Or, well, I wanted it to sound like that, as I had already decided to name the girls kurls and the boys pois. The original Pasa hasn’t been uploaded anywhere, but I happened to have included the track in a Youtube stream once, so you know what I’m talking about: https://youtu.be/32fLINqzXo8?t=840
Concerning their design in general, I wanted creatures that looked like pixies. Their pointy noses are what they are so they can simulate beaks when they transform themselves into birds.Kurlitads cannot die of old age and this poi originates from a time they were still perceived to exist. He isn’t a newborn or anything of the sort. He just found himself alone one day and travelled around the world until he came across a group of sleeping kurlitads. He inserted himself into the group without warning and the next morning these ladies woke up a gentleman richer. The end.
UGH My Heart
So... I’ve been busy reading instead of doing my homework and that’s why I have like... 10 assignments due in less than 6 hours and I’ve read 2 1/2 books this week. Alright... 1 1/2.. I technically listened to 1 book but that’s only because I couldn’t read it at work like I usually do. Yea I know, model employee. What can I say? When you’re over a job and the person in charge of you clearly doesn’t give a shit... ehh.. ya know, you start to just not care anymore.
Anyways... The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. That was a really good book. It wasn’t necessarily my favorite but I will say that it’s definitely up there with the greats. I highly recommend that book. It legit had it all. Pirateds, Highwaymen, (my stupid typos), seemingly unrequited love, best friends, family, disasters, sexuality issues, medical issues, the freaking eighteenth century. I mean, really, it’s jam packed. READ IT!
As of.. ohh I’d say.. 10 minutes ago, I was reading We Contain Multitudes. Hands down the most beautifully written book that I have ever read. Walt Whitman, eat your heart out. It’s perfect. I was a little confused at first, as it’s written entirely in letters between the main characters, but once I realized what was up... I had it and BOOOOYYYY did I have it. Adam and Jonathan are breath taking honestly. I know that I just finished it.. but I feel like I need more of them. MORE I SAY. This book just came out, hah like Adam, last month so I have hope that MAYBE there will be another book to help add to their story. There’s a ton of potential for a sequel and perhaps even a series to finish Jonathan’s high school days... He does say that life starts after high school. Here’s to hoping *Cheers*
I’ve just downloaded Carry On sooo that may be my next endeavor but who’s to say really.
I’ll keep you posted
