The next time Katie wanted to go to the park, I didn't moan and groan like I usually would. I had to physically keep myself from launching off of the couch in the family room and dragging her outside.
"Yeah, sure, Mom, I'll take her." I forced out as nonchalantly as I could, earning a few suspicious looks from my mother and older brother.
"Are you sure, Y/N?" My older brother asked, looking me up and down with narrowed eyes. "'Cause I mean, I can definitely take her if you're not up for it. After all, didn't you say you had a new single by that band you like that you were going to sit around all day to wait for?"
I shrugged, casting my eyes down at my phone so as to not look guilty. "I just want some fresh air, what's so unusual about that?"
He gave me another scrutinizing glare before seemingly letting it go. "Yeah, whatever," He shrugged. "but if you're up to something," he wagged his finger at me like a cheesy Disney villain, "I'll find out."
I rolled my eyes, languidly pulling myself off of the couch in a stretch before grabbing my keys and patting my brother's shoulder on the way out the door. "Good luck with that."
I was halfway down the driveway when the front door opened again. "You forgot Katie, dumbass!" My brother yelled, his head sticking out of the door as Katie ran to catch up with me.
"Whatever." I mumbled under my breath as I grabbed Katie's hand in mine before crossing the street.
"Don't worry," Katie said cheerfully, "I know you're distracted, so I'm not taking offense.
I mumbled some kind of agreement under my breath, but my mind was busy thinking of all the different 'accidents' I could orchestrate in order to talk to the blond-haired boy without embarrassing myself.
"Luke!" A familiar voice screeched from the other side of the park the park as soon as we arrived. My head snapped up from my phone automatically at the sound, causing me to completely forget about Katie and drop her hand. Being the perceptive and easygoing little sister she was, she wasn't worried or upset, but rather walked away from me to meet up with her friends at the swing set like she always does. She was quite an independent four year old, luckily.
I made my way over to the bench I usually sit at without taking my eyes off of the little blond boy - Shawn - because I knew if I kept watching him the other one would show up. Naturally, I bumped into someone trying to sit down.
"Oh, I'm sorry." I mumbled without looking at the person I had inevitably just knocked off of the park bench.
"Too busy staring at my little brother?" A familiar, amused-sounding voice came from on the ground next to me.
Of course the person I had knocked over was the very person I was looking for, that could only happen to me. I shook my head, silently cursing myself as I reached down and gave him a hand to help him up, blushing furiously. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to knock you over." I apologized profusely.
He was laughing at me. The blond boy I'd been obsessing over for almost a week was laughing at me. "You were distracted, it's not a big deal."
"Oh," I stuttered, blushing more as I looked over to where he was gesturing toward his little brother, who, conveniently, was deep in the type of serious conversation that only toddlers could have with none other than Katie. "I wasn't- I was looking for- I was just-"
The blond boy cut me off. "Don't worry. You were just watching your little sister, right?"
"Yes," I responded, relieved though my face was still undeniably on fire. "Right, my sister."
We both sat in awkward silence for a moment before I thought to ask, "Wait, how did you know that's my little sister?"
"How did you know that's my little brother?"
"Touché." I responded.
After my face had finally begun to cool down and it was starting to get dark, Katie called over to me, tired and ready to go home.
"I guess that's my cue to go." I said to the blond-haired boy, standing up and grabbing my phone from the seat next to me. Katie was already walking toward me sluggishly. She was definitely ready to go to bed.
"Wait!" The blond-haired boy exclaimed, just before Katie got to me.
He stood up quickly and fumbled with his back pocket before slipping out a phone. "Can I get your number?" He asked shyly, blushing. "I wanted to ask you the last time you were here but you left before I could get the chance."
Katie finally reached me and tugged at the side of my flannel, mumbling my name before yawning and demanding that we leave.
I took Katie's hand and smiled at the blond-haired boy. "Sorry, I have to leave." I started to walk away.
Before we had left the park, I turned around to see the blond-haired boy still standing there with his phone in his hand, watching me leave. "Meet me here tomorrow around the same time and we'll see about getting my number, blondie." I shouted.
He seemed frozen, so I turned around and continued walking, but just before we were out of earshot, I heard him yell back, "The name's Luke!"
