OdyPoli is shit from a butt and heres why

before I start this because I know SOMEONES gonna try it— no this is not a direct attack to the shippers. USUALLY they are pretty chill (ill focus on the toxic side later). I am not your dad. This is not me trying to dictate what you like.

Now that the disclaimers done allow me to yap.

The thing with OdyPoli is that its just… a nothing burger. It’s nothing special. Theres no conflict. Theres no spice. Nothing really interesting about it. Their whole trope is just “they’re best friends who fell in love and one of them died” like okay hoe we get it😭

In this I want to compare them to EuryOdy and Lams from Hamilton because they have similar things going on but the difference is OdyPoli lacks a pull factor to the ship.

Lams, for starters. I know that some people don’t like Lams because they think Lams lack substance but I disagree. I think it has a lot of substance, at least compared to OdyPoli.

They have the same dynamic as OdyPoli, “they’re best friends who fell in love and one of them died.” What makes Lams more interesting is 1. They’re both real characters and 2. It has some sort of conflict.

A big issue with Epic is that it focuses too much on Odysseus. While yes, he is the main character, other characters should get a chance to show their character. They should have a chance to be fleshed out. The reason why Laurens’s death is so impactful is because we had a chance to get to know him. We saw him express his ideas, his goals, his personality. We were able to get to know Laurens which makes his death so painful.

Polites on the other hand, only got one song to get to know him along with 2-3 other lines. Spoiler alert: that is not enough to get to know a character. Especially when that character gets killed halfway through the second saga. A character whos not a character takes away from an interesting ship.

And I know this is coming from a guy who’s shipped a ship that involved non character before but at least that one had conflict. Which brings me to the next reason as to why OdyPoli is just a shitter Lams.

Lams has substance because there is time period conflict. Queer people were not widely accepted at the time and one of them was married to a woman. That creates a forbidden and possibly unrequited aspect of the ship.

You know what the problem is with that when it comes to OdyPoli?

They’re in ancient Greece.

Yeah there isn’t really a forbidden conflict to OdyPoli when they’re on the same side, already good friends and no one really cares if you’re gay as long as you’re not a bottom. It’s a grump x sunshine except its the lamest grump x sunshine oat🫩🥀

It’s so overglazed it hurts. Im going to compare it to EuryOdy next and im going to try and be unbiased when I compare and contrast.

For me EuryOdy is perfectly toxic. It’s a leader x right hand man and it has a conflict. The spice in the ship is Eurylochus watching his partner lose himself over the course of years as their journey gets more and more hopeless. THATS SOMETHING‼️ And it has a possible unrequited aspect because Eurylochus is married to Ody’s sister so you could say that Eurylochus married Ctimene because he couldn’t have Ody.

OdyPoli COULD have been something similar but Eurylochus was given time to develop and Polites wasn’t. The possible unrequited love is… something but not as interesting as it would be if it was Euryody. It’s boring because they were friendly when Polites died.

I’m not saying a ship HAS to be toxic to be interesting but I am saying that they have no spark. Hell even EuryPoli is better than OdyPoli because there is more potential. Eurylochus carries on Polites’s philosophy to hold onto his memory while he watches his friend abandon and forget about him entirely. And if its polycrew? Even better! Eury brings the spice and I cannot be convinced otherwise.

And lastly, I wanna chat a little about the shippers. Usually they’re calm, but theres a chunk of them who are dih hoppers and what I mean is they characterize Polites as a lapdog that loves Odysseus and hates Eurylochus. Because why would Polites ever criticize Ody, right?

I’ve talked about the infantilization of Polites before so I’ll keep it brief— it is SO irritating when a soldier in media is characterized as innocent twink who glazes the mc just because they’re optimistic. Like okay brotato chip.

I might go back to tweak this a lil but wtv

In conclusion: Odypoli is unseasoned chicken and it is propaganda I refuse to fall for
