L’america (1994) is one of the New York Times 1,000 Best Films.

David Ansen wrote in Newsweek “It's built on deceit but evolves into something more complex--a shared yearning that links the Italian past to the Italian present. Amelio's eloquent but unsentimental humanism asks us to reconsider our relationship to the wretched of the earth.”

My rating - unseen.  It appears to be a politically correct expose of the world’s political refugees.  I believe I already have a strong relationship with the wretched of the earth, but I may be moved.

The film was co-written and directed by GIanni Amelio, who was born in Calibria, Italy, and has 35 director credits, from a 1967 Italian short documentary, his first feature in 1982, through a project now in pre-production.  Most of his work has been on tv, including tv movies, shorts and documentaries, and two tv episodes.
