so i've finally started getting in more pages of The Shards and the way i would explain bret easton ellis to someone is that he's a gay male gen xer writing dead dove fanfic (self-fic??) about his own life traumas like an unhinged teenage girl posting on ao3. and ofc that if you were to tell him this he'd protest mightily or have no idea what tf you were talking about. but. like. he is constantly repeating the same ideas (WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. TO US. IN THE AUTUMN OF 1981. DURING OUR SENIOR YEAR AT BUCKLEY.) (???!!) (THE HOUSE ON MULHOLLAND DRIVE - this is just his own house, but it's never "home" or "my house", it's always THE HOUSE ON MULHOLLAND DRIVE) (~~~PARADISAICAL~~~), is constantly describing in great detail what everyone is wearing all the time, is constantly referencing songs or movies or pop culture of the time, is constantly horny and jacking off, yearns and daydreams all day, writes in run-in sentences that go on forever bc he gets distracted etc.
like there is an entire scene in which he meticulously describes going to see the shining when it came out, his relationship with the book, the whole anticipation and wait for the movie, who he invited, the car he drove there, how the theater looked like, how long the line was, where he sat etc
there's a lot to unpack here but what's deeply funny to me is that i think i speak his language. i think i get it 😅 to paraphrase him, what this might suggest about me is open to interpretation 💀
