Language practice / pen pal game

I came up with a very simple idea to help me practice my target languages, so if you want to take part please hit me up !

What is the game ?

The goal is to find someone that is learning your native language and that speaks your target language.

Here are 30 questions. You should ask each other to answer a question (ex : number 18.) This gives you the opportunity to write a paragraph that allows you to search for more vocabulary and grammar than basic conversations.

Ask each other all the questions (or agree on a different number if you feel like there are too many / not enough questions) before introducing yourself to each other (name, city, studies, hobbies, family…)

Hopefully having someone writing personal things to you about themselves will trigger your curiosity enough to help you write in your target language regularly, practice, and bond with someone !

How did I come up with this game ?

I have tried to practice languages forever and I think one of the best ways to practice it is through conversation with native people of the languages I learn. However I have always found it very hard to find a pen pal and bond with someone I don't know. Most of the time, the conversations I've had with "pen pals" did not go any further than basic information about ourselves and it did not help learn the language. With this game I wish to trigger curiosity in order to practice and bond with someone so we can practice even once the game is over !

Want to play this game with me ?

I am looking to practice Spanish and Italian (also would not be against English) and I am a French native speaker. So if you are a native speaker of these languages and are learning French (or just want to play the game and are willing to write to me in your native language), that could work !

Please be somewhere between 20 and 25 yo

I am willing to use snail mail or e-mails for that game as I think it is more convenient to write "long" texts ! Also, snail mail is more personal and triggers curiosity even more

Japanese 30-Day Reading Challenge (Adaptable to other languages)

Hey! So I really like to do challenges for some reason lol And I feel like there is a lack of challenges focused on reading or on beginner levels so I came up with this idea!

The challenge consists of reading 30 short stories in the course of 30 days (alternatively, one book with multiple chapters so you read one chapter each day). The challenge requires you to know at least the kanas. You can find very easy books with Tadoku, pretty much all of them have furigana! For more complex readings, you can use Satori Reader. If you have any other sources, please share them!

Afterwards:

Summarize the story/chapter in your own words, bonus points if you do it in Japanese!

Identify at least one grammar point that you saw in the reading.

Make a vocabulary list out of words from the chapter (try to include Kanji!!)

Bonus: Record yourself reading the story!

Grüß Gott, Grüß dich, Grüß Sie, Grüezi, Servus! (southerners say these!) 

Tachchen, Moin moin (For the ones up in the north)

Was geht ab? (For the "cool kids")

Wie geht es dir? is for people either your age, younger or people you know well, Wie geht es Ihnen? is more formal, and is the default unless you get to know the person better with time and the ice melts 

Wie geht's? is even more casual 

Was ist los? Was ist hier los? Was ist denn los? sound like what's up or what's wrong, “denn” makes it even more serious, “hier” means here

Alles Klar? is more like is everything alright?

Extra Tip: Don't ask everyone you talk to how they are, store clerks and waitresses don't care

I return to the langblr community with a 30 days challenge! I hope I’ll get some of you guys’ interest. June is approaching, it’s summertime, and I assume a lot of us have some free time on their hands. So I came up with this!

The goal is to make 30 flashcards (I recommend using Quizlet! It’s free and super handy!) in your target language daily with the topic being the word of the day. Split the 30 flashcards into 10 verbs, 10 nouns, and 10 adjectives. Feel free to add more, expand your horizons by adding idioms/phrases, but 30 flashcards is a bare minimum. 900 new words in a month, can you believe?

new year, new language challenge 🎉

the goal: starting a new language on the 1st of january (or at least in early january), and sticking with it and working with it consistently for the rest of the year to see how far it gets you

why: personally, i think it will make it easier to track my progress, which is a good motivator for me. also ! it will be fun 

who: i’m making this challenge for with my own goals in mind, but anyone who wants to join is encouraged to do so! i’ll be using the tag #nynlchallenge to track my progress, if anyone wants to do the same!

now, finally... the rules (more like ~guidelines~ but whatever) 

choose an entirely new language (or one you know very little of)

learning methods can be whatever but (at least for me) the goal is to get a daily average of 15 minutes (but ofc, the more, the better) 

by that i mean: life happens, so if there is a day or two a week with no learning/revision, that’s cool. however, try to compensate for this lost time, so that it averages out 

before starting the challenge, create a (tentative) list of goals. these can be weekly and/or monthly, and should be as specific as possible – mine is here, if anyone wants some inspiration

keep track of your progress! i recommend using the app mastery (only available for android, i think) or something similar to log every session so you can easily see how much time you have amassed!

write updates when you can! preferably at least once a month! 

most importantly (cliché but very true): have fun!!!!! 💖💕💞

I am—I didn’t really have a chance to work out any New Year’s goals in December so instead I’ve spent the last week thinking about what it is I want to achieve this year.
