Getting disappointed that Vivi's actress isn't Arab is completely valid, and I completely respect your complaints on this.

However, if with that complaint comes the "Luffy is okay because he was Brazilian and the actor is Mexican so is all the same". Then you are just like the casting people that you are complaining about!! Because you are asking for good representation for you, but then proceed to say that a region that consists of several completely different countries is all the same.

Is Iñaki fantastic as Luffy? Yes, he is. But that doesn't change the fact that the casting department also considered latinamerican nationalities interchangeable.

I know that Encanto has been out for awhile now, but after seeing it, I have to say something. REPRESENTATION MATTERS.

When I was little, I would always watch Disney princess movies with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, etc. Anyways, I would see these white princesses with blue eyes and I wanted to look and be like them so bad. I was a little Latina girl, who so desperately wanted to be white just so I can be like the main characters in my favorite movies. Even then, there wasn’t much POC princesses for me to identify with and the overwhelming number of white princesses overshadowed them. I eventually grew out of this, but it always bothered me how there wasn’t a lot of representation of Latin culture in media. Fast forward years later, as I was walking into the living room, my family was watching Encanto for the first time. My Tío looked at me, back at the tv screen where Mirabel was, and then looked at me again. He then said, “That looks like Amanda (me)!” and the rest of my family agreed, with big smiles on their faces. I looked at her, and I was surprised. There was a resemblance between me and Mirabel!

I was so excited by this, because something like this rarely happened, especially in a Disney movie. I just couldn’t believe that there was a Disney character that looked like me. Years and years later, and my five year old self finally felt seen. Then I started to think about the little girls this age seeing Mirabel or Dolores or Luisa or Isabel and how they see themselves in these characters. These little girls will feel represented not only on the screen but in the stores with Encanto toys and clothing. They can embrace their culture with pride alongside these characters instead of trying to repress it.

I wish I had Encanto when I was younger, in a time when I was disregarding my own culture and heritage to favor another. But I’m glad to have it now, at a time where I appreciate it and can see the effects it has on the next generation of young Latina girls.

Let’s Get Mads This Role!

This is an open casting call as you can see. And Mads deserves to show off her acting chops. America Ferrera is the actress most known for her roles in Gotta Kick It Up, Ugly Betty, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and Superstore. This would be an AMAZING opportunity for Mads and she is more likely to get the role since it is meant for a Latina in their late teens to early twenties.

So that way it is clear that America is not being a purist on who can play the role and that Mads has a proper shot.
