Lesson 1: Tolerance

There are many, many things that the Prophet Muhammed (Saw) has taught us on numerous issues and topics of life. His life as a whole is like a book that one can educate themselves from, that one can learn how to live their own life from. Of course one cannot be exactly like the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) but what counts is that you try to implement his teachings into your life. One of the lessons our Prophet (PBUH) has taught us is the lesson of being tolerant. The Prophet (saw) had endured countless trials and tribulations that came his way through the form of persecution by his innumerable enemies. There were times a many where his companions asked the prophet to curse those opponents, however, the Prophet (PBUH) responded with: "I have not been sent to lay a curse upon men but to be a blessing to them.” (Muslim)

As humans we perceive it difficult to have such a response and to even want to respond in a way that would deem good for our enemies, however, the prophet (PBUH) knew of his duty and why Allah had created him and cursing another creation of god was not a part of his duty but to be a blessing to others was one reason he was created. His opponents continued to treat him and his companions unjustly and cruelly, but he always prayed for them.

The prophet Muhammed (SAW) once decided to personally visit the village of Ta’if, to the east of Makkah, to invite its inhabitants to Islam. The people rejected him, stoned him, and drove him out. Angel Gabriel came to him and said:

"Send me to do what you wish. If you wish, I will crush them between the two mountains of Makkah.”

With this the Prophet (PBUH) replied: "Rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their loins those who will worship Allah alone and not associate anything with Him.”  (Al-Bukhari) This yet again exhibits the tolerance level and kindness of the Prophet Muhammed (SAW). Such manners of tolerance gained Prophet Muhammed (SAW) the respect even of his enemies, and his followers stood by him through all kinds of hardship and misfortune.

From this, we can learn that we should wish best for everyone even our enemies, even if they are the worst. Allah will be the judge of everything and everyone and what we go through is all a test from Allah.
