Frida Kahlo's Orthopedic Aids, ca. 1950s
Frida’s lifelong struggle with her health eventually resulted in the amputation of her lower right leg in 1953. The prosthetic leg she used during the last year of her life has become a symbol of her suffering and the source of her inspiration – and has been displayed in museums accordingly.
After going through numerous surgeries and health issues, Frida Kahlo’s orthopedic aids helped her move around. She also wore various custom-made corsets and prosthetics.
