Plant of the Day
Monday 30 September 2024
Included in a new herbaceous border outside Inverness Botanic Garden, Scotland, was the strong growing Ligularia dentata 'Desdemona’ (leopard plant). This plant needs a deep, fertile, reliably moist soil in full sun with protection from strong winds.

Fantastic greens for this tsuwabuki (leopard plant, Japanese silverleaf) themed summer outfit.
The kimono has a kanzemizu (swirling water pattern, originated from Kanze school of Noh) ground, while the obi also presents kikyo (Chinese bellflower) over ryuusui (running water/stream).

Weather Report
Leopard plants like wet, humus-rich soil and prefer partial shade. I found this lovely specimen growing in a courtyard where it probably gets about six hours of sun a day. This well-tended garden is at the center of a swanky condo project and, no doubt, a professional gardener takes very good care of it.
It's been a long, dry summer in Vancouver. We were hoping for a little rain on Tuesday night but it never materialized. We had our last shower about a month ago but it lasted fifteen minutes, and by noon everything was dry again. Today the air is full of wood smoke from hundreds of forest fires burning in the interior. It's the worst wildfire season in Canadian history
Please don't ask me about my leopard plant in the back garden. It gets a blistering twelve hours of sun a day and it's not enjoying this hot weather - at all!
