How To Tag Your Fic

Hello! After searching through scores of fics to find things for our lovely readers, the Librarian noticed a trend. Many fics are tagged #i don’t know how to tag. The Librarian wants to help! A properly tagged fic helps readers discover your fic amongst the chaos and helps them to re-find your fic later on! So, lets get tagging.

Tags to include: 

Location

Time period

Characters (Including side characters)

Themes/feelings: fluff, angst, hurt/comfort, etc.

Ships/Relationships (including side ships)

AU/canon/verse

unique props/places/ideas/imagery

Relationship status

Tropes: one bed, get together, they were roommates, nerd/jock, etc. 

Holidays:time of year

Ages (doesn’t have to be exact, but are they teens? adults?) 

MUST include warnings like MCD, rating, etc.

Trigger warnings or content warnings

Look at all those tags! Use this list each time you get ready to post a new fic and you’ll be sure to attract more readers and help people come back over and over. 

Also, don’t be so afraid about giving away the ending, that you fail to give warnings. The warnings are there for people to exclude in their searches and protect themselves from emotional harm.

Discord Server for Academic Library Help and Research Help during Corona: S.I.L.A.S. (Specializing In Library Academic Support)

Hey everyone, so I work at an academic library and today I’ve launched a personal Discord server to offer help to students who need library reference and research help. (You’ll see me in-server with the nickname “J.P. Armitage.”)

I have Discord running on my desktop in the background pretty much sixteen hours a day, seven days a week right now, so if you need help figuring out a database, finding peer-reviewed articles, want someone to give you quick thoughts on a paper, etc., I may be able to help.  I don’t expect it to be a high volume server, but I’m offering it to our students during the current social distancing conditions because our physical facility is closed, and thought I would offer it to you out there as well.  DM me if the invite link has expired by the time you want it. Who’s Behind That Chat Box?

The core reference team in the Terrell Main Library staffs the library chat box found on the library homepage. You can reach us on Sunday afternoon, during the day Monday through Friday, and evenings Monday through Thursday. 

So, who are we? What are our jobs?  What do we look like? What do we want you to know?

Meet Megan, Eboni and Elizabeth.

Megan’s job title is Academic Engagement & Digital Initiatives Coordinator/Team Leader of Reference and Instruction. She would like all of you to know, “If you've got a research problem, chances are good that you are not alone. By asking questions, you can help us make things smoother for everyone.”

Eboni’s job title is Outreach and Programming Librarian. She would like share an African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” She also wants to let you know, “I’m happy to join you on your research journey. I am passionate about helping you to be the best researcher you can be!”

@ people who are familiar with the Gigablast and DuckDuck Go search engines, where do find the search results number (e.g. 1,600,000 Search Results, 750,000 Search results, etc)???

I’m doing an assignment for my library course on internet research, and part of it is looking uping a subject or question through different search engines, and then sharing the search results number for each engine. I must be fucking blind or something because I can’t find the search result number for Gigablast and DuckDuck Go, so if anyone could help a future library technician, that would be great.

Do you have any book recommendations? I'm going to the library (It's a smaller library, but if there's also a few other libraries in my city that are better) and I want to get some books about ancient Greece and the Gods, but I'm not sure if there are any specific ones I should look for.

If you’re going to the library I suggest browsing what they have! I’ve found some gems by doing that! Make sure to look at all the sections bc the topic of Ancient Greece actually spans many subjects. Here’s a guide to help you navigate the library!

Philosophy is usually around the 180s. This is where you’ll find the works of Socrates, Plato, and other important Greek Philosophers

Mythology is typically placed around 292

Customs and Folklore are in the 390s. There may not be anything there specifically for Ancient Greece but you never know.

Classical Greek language books are around 480

Greek Sculpture is 733

880s is where you’ll find the plays and poems from Greek authors

938 is where you’ll find the history books

As you can tell I’ve spent a lot of time in libraries lol! Anyway I hope this helps and I hope you find some good stuff! Let me know what you end up checking out if you do!

The library is extra quiet today, since most of you are traveling home to finish remotely. Though many staff do not have to travel, we will take a couple of days off before we return to campus. As you settle into your new remote study routine keep this in mind, the library staff and library materials can be accessed online.

Books, articles and more

Now that you are off campus you will have to connect through the proxy server first, but then you can access the millions of online library resources to complete your work.  If our online resources aren’t what you are looking for, but our print items are, we can supply that too. If you have a section of a book you need simply fill out an inter-library loan request, here’s how.

Library staff is available on chat, several hours a day, six days a week (Sun - Fri.)  We can help with access problems, finding materials, citation questions and more.

Hey so, do you guys know any libraries that let people who don’t live there take out a virtual library card? I already tried Brooklyn Public Library but I accidentally let my card expire ( I’m very upset with myself).

I just saw a post where the OP managed to get help finding a lost story, so I’m gonna try to do the same.

There is a book I read aggggggggggges ago that I’ve been trying to find for the past several years. It was a YA fiction book that came out probably in the mid-90s (possibly early 90s). The cover for the hard copy I owned was like Tuscan orange, a pretty bright blue, and had the characters from the story chasing each other from the back cover to the front cover. (I think there might’ve been a dog involved?) The story involved a group of strangers randomly coming together to go on an adventure. I think one of the characters might’ve been a demi-god but didn’t realize it? And I think it was taking place in Atlantis? (Not 100% sure on that part…)

If anyone could help me find this book again—even if it’s just the name or author—you would have my eternal, ETERNAL gratitude!! (I’d never intended to get rid of my copy, but when my mom sold her house she chucked out a tub of books that I hadn’t been able to take with me to college…)
