Research Project

Hi everybody! I’m a librarian working on a research project aimed at understanding fanfiction and the wider fanfiction community so that it can be better included, represented, and supported within the library sphere. I’m currently running a pilot study to validate my research tools as part of a Higher Degree through Research course (Graduate Certificate in Arts and Social Science Research) via the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University, Australia. If you’re over 18, a part of the fanfiction community, and interested in participating in my research project, please go and do a survey here.

All data collected through the survey is anonymous and will not be gifted or sold to anyone. If you choose to participate in the interview process, your personal information will be anonymised, protected, and destroyed according to CSU policy. Hennepin History: My Great-Grandfather, A 13-year-old in the Civil War

"My mother sent me after the cows," he declared. "That was my evening job and I was getting tired of it. There was much talk of the war among the men and it had come to my ears every day. I had the urge to join the army. Because of my youth, I was not permitted to join a company. But that night I did not return to the cows. I got on a boat which was going downriver instead and I went to Fort Snelling. There I hung around the old Minnesota Third, and after a few weeks found myself with Sherman's army marching to the sea." - George Swift describing his enlistment, published in the Minneapolis Daily Star, February 21, 1925

Special Collections volunteer Will Craig recently took a deep dive into his family's history and discovered the story of his great-grandfather George Swift, alias Stringer. In 1861, at just 13-years-old, George unofficially joined the army as a drummer boy, then officially joined the Ohio 69th a year later. George returned to Minnesota after the war, raised a family, and operated a drugstore in Robbinsdale. George was a founding member of the Morgan Post GAR Fife and Drum Corps (pictured above).

A new way to search, sort of like tracing citations only . . . well, try it.

But then I happened on a nifty new tool today, the JSTOR Labs Text Analyzer, thanks to the kind of serendipty my Twitter community seems to promote. Basically, you upload a document (something you wrote, a text you're reading, an article PDF, a syllabus, even) and . . . something magical happens. The analyzer finds patterns in the text and looks for similar documents. The words used in the pattern appear on one side.
