Got some great advice from my therapist today: "Understanding why someone is acting the way they do doesn't equate to having to justify their actions."

In other words, when you feel indignant or angry from how you've been hurt by someone who is meant to love you (parents, spouses, friends, etc) yet is hurting you unwittingly, it certainly helps to put things into perspective and see what influenced their actions. Maybe they were hurt too. Maybe they were raised in a cycle of abuse too, that what they do is just a knee-jerk reaction albeit it being harmful. Finding compassion in these circumstances helps us let go of that resentment and hatred we hold deep in our hearts and let's face it, bottling yourself up with contempt is not healthy for anyone at all, nor is it conducive to healing.

Yet, this does not in any way mean that what they did was right. You're still correct in saying that they wronged you. The hurt and despair that you feel is still valid. You need not dismiss their wrongdoings. Although you should try to understand, you do not owe them forgiveness.
