Digimon Beatbreak Episode 29 Review - Girl Power

Before you get upset over Wolvermon not achieving ultimate in this episode, the episode kind of showed that she wasn’t going to evolve because the spotlight wasn’t on Pristimon and it was just Reina. Instead, this episode is mostly introducing Rose into the narrative through the perspective of Reina.

I think this is the first time Glowing Dawn went on a solo undercover mission as Reina, the only female member of the group, has to get dolled up to attend a meet-and-greet of a up and coming male actor who is also their target as women have gone missing and he could be behind the incidents. While not having Tomoro and Makoto crossdress was a wasted opportunity, I do understand why it was only Reina who had to go because Gekkomon would ruin everything and Reina is the only one who’s about Maki’s height, so she can fit into her clothes—Tomoro and Makoto are shorter than Maki who is 175 cm tall (around 5’8).

The highlight of the episode is definitely Rose who also shows up to the meet-and-greet. While people might be shocked that Reina didn’t recognize Rose as a member of the Five Stars due to her earring, it does make sense because one wouldn’t expect a top Cleaner, at the very top of the Cleaner hierarchy, to be doing such a mission, but Rose has her reasons. She seems to be investigating GIFT, but Urato/Myotismon didn’t seem to be a part of the organization. Whether she’s evil or not is yet to be determined, but she does seem interested in Reina, though. While Rose wasn’t fully the star of the episode, I did like the tidbits the episode told about her like how she’s a beauty consultant for some of the biggest names like politicians and celebrities, an expert martial artist, and has two subordinates named Kanon and Meto. In the eyes of a woman like me, she’s definitely one of the most attractive Digimon characters by far. Legit got emotional seeing her. Kyo didn’t seem too thrilled seeing her, so it does make me wonder if he has some personal issues with her; she seems to be acquainted with him, which could indicate she was the Wood Star during the time he was still active as the Gold Star.

Regarding Myotismon (Vamdemon in Japanese), I did find it amusing how he’s in an episode that stars Mutsumi Tamura yet again. In Ghost Game, he was featured in an episode where Betelgammamon first evolved into Canoweissmon and that episode had Tamura as Hiro. In Beatbreak, Tamura plays Pristimon/Wolvermon, so it’s basically an unusual Easter Egg. I wonder if the animation staff had a fun time animating him because he was very detailed in some face shots. It was a little disappointing that he lost to Wolvermon so quickly, but I’m happy that Wolvermon didn’t get jobbed for once. Regardless, he was very nefarious that Reina legit had to fend off his attacks with her bare hands as Pristimon was forcibly separated from her at the time.

Rose is voiced by Ryoko Shiraishi, who has been in several Digimon media. She was Akari (Angie), ChibiKamemon and Mervamon in Xros Wars (Fusion), Sora in the Adventure 2020 reboot, Opposumon in Hunters and Ghost Game, and Yukiha in Digimon Survive. Outside of Digimon, she voiced Chocho in Boruto, Spider Sister Demon in Demon Slayer and Hiroshi in Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube. Her partner Lilamon is voiced by Shino Shimoji, who voiced Floramon in Digimon Survive. Outside of Digimon, she’s known for voicing Pyra and Mythra in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Shionne Imeris in Tales of Arise.

Her subordinates Kanon and Meto are voiced in this episode, but they also had their voice actresses revealed in the official Twitter page. Meto Enishida, the boyish woman, is voiced by Hibiku Yamamura who voiced Agott in Witch Hat Atelier, Iruka Okazaki in Medalist, and Cure Twinkle in Go! Princess Precure; this is Yamamura’s first time in Digimon. Kanon Tsuwabuki, the long haired woman, is voiced by Yu Shimamura who voiced Offmon in Appmon and Jellymon in Ghost Game. Outside of Digimon, Shimamura voiced Princess Zelda in Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, Annie Leonhart in Attack on Titan and Cure Flora in Go! Princess Precure. Rose’s faction is called Brilliant Thorns, by the way.

Myotismon and Urato are voiced by Hiroyuki Yoshino who hasn’t been in a Digimon media before. He voiced Iwaizumi in Haikyuu, Frankie in Spy x Family and Manjiro in Dandadan. I liked how different he sounds when disguised as Urato and then as Myotismon.

Anyways, I’m sure Reina will achieve Ultimate in a few episodes. The next episode preview does make it seem like Makoto will get Ultimate before she does as it’s family drama time for him. I am as shocked as Reina and Tomoro narrating the preview when he revealed he has a twin brother. I can’t wait to see the episode next week. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!
