the thing is that it's so performative for both of them. they're just playacting at the happy family dream and they're good at it! because they have common goals! (fit in to the neighborhood, love Ben, and above all Be Normal)

Lisa, to Dean, has the apple pie normal life because Dean has never had it. he doesn't even know what he's looking for, but let's be real and frank. Lisa has never really fit in - sure she is pretty and blends, but she's a single mom of a boy whose dad has never been around. shes been the topic of pta and hoa gossip for YEARS. and we've been over it a thousand times but - she is straight up off the path for letting Dean move in. but what does he provide her? other than the second income she was obviously doing okay without and a bedfellow - he gives her the well rounded all-american family appearance. she's no longer the single mom, now she's lisa-and-dean and their son Ben. she's not a topic of gossip because she's got the shield of being-in-a-relationship the defense of the live in boyfriend. she is playacting at being the perfect girlfriend, the understanding partner, the cool girl.
