How about ghost monkey au with slow boiled stone egg au and penumbra au sprinkled in. I wonder how Macaque would react to finding his mate holding two baby monkies, Rumble and Savage?
Ohhh baby monkeys!!
Macaque probably would start crying if he found Wukong cradling his remaining shadows - the last signs of his chi on earth. The twin girls (+their weaker concept-art little brother Thunder) are natural shadow wielders.
And one was "born" (if you consider collapsing into a baby from a shadow-clone overloaded with chi, a birth) with his all-hearing ears, leading to an unexpected side-effect....
Rumble: (*tumbles out of a shadow, toddle-runs toward her parent!*) Wukong, holding Savage: "Oh? My little earthquake, what's the matter?" Rumble: (*impatient/excited hopping! Starts manipulating the shadows on the wall into a more distinct shape*) Wukong, curious: "You learned how to make a new shape? That's wonderful! It looks like-" (*goes quiet as he realises*) "-like..." (*the shadow Rumble projects is the silhouette of Macaque - a sad by happy expression shown in the light of his face*) Wukong, realising: "Oh... my love..." (*Wukong approaches the shadow, careful not to break his daughter's concentration. He places his open hand on the wall where Macaque's own would be.*) Wukong, wistfully: "I should have known, she inherited your ears... I hope you've only said good things about me." Macaque's silhouette: (*leans towards his mate as if trying to touch foreheads. gives a cheeky grin at Wukong's words.*)
After that day, Wukong is far more vigilant for signs of Macaque's presence. He doesn't want their daughter to be the only one paying attention, after all!
After LBD's release, and Macaque gaining part of her corporeal form back, the other two babies formally meet their Baba! But they are confused and sad why he can't hug them. :(
As for a Stone Egg?
That would certainly make Wukong only ever more determined to get his mate's body back! One way or another, Macaque will hold their baby!
Oh imagine Iron Fan meeting the triplets-
She didn't really believe her husband or her son when they told her that Wukong had three babies because she really can't believe Wukong wouldn't figure out that donating dao= actual babies.
Then the family is released from the scroll of memory by a very concerned Xiaotian and Xiaojiao, Wukong, and three small babies. Thunder, the shyest one, reaches out first to meet his aunt.
Iron Fan hadn't been around during New Years to meet the triplets like her boys had. When her husband rushed home (son in tow) and told her that Sun Wukong had three very young cubs, PIF was intrigued.
Her first question was obvious: Whom was responsible?
DBK, trying not to laugh: "You would not believe me if I told you." PIF, smirking as she sips tea: "I am rarely surprised." DBK: "The Macaque." PIF, teacup rattles slightly: "...I will admit, that is surprising. But I thought Macaque had long since past?" DBK: "It appears that our late brother left behind three pieces of his soul on Flower Fruit Mountain to guard his effects. After his passing, Brother Wukong could not bear parting with the shadows of his mate - and began pouring his own life energy into them." PIF, understanding: "Ah. Supplying the Yang to the Yin. No wonder. I would have done the same if you had left shadows of your own." DBK, chuckling: "He certainly hadn't known that when they formed!" PIF, suppressing a laugh: "Pardon?!"
Red Son supplies photographic proof (shared by Mei) of the shadowy monkey cubs playing with Noodle Boy on the airship, and reuniting with their "Mother" Sun Wukong once freed. Little dark fluffy things with red markings on their faces, and gleaming red-orange eyes.
PIF: "That one in his arms... they are smaller than their siblings." DBK: "Wukong explained that he had not known of the third shadow until the elder two had fully formed. It was still too underdeveloped to separate from him when he had been captured." PIF, sympathetic: "Oh, poor dear... I hope you scolded him for putting himself and his baby in danger!" DBK: "You know I did. Although I had been distracted at the time - the littlest one had chosen that moment to finally break away from his parent and exist in this plane!" PIF, adoring: "Aww."
Having birthed a child with special needs herself, Iron Fan feels a kinship with the smallest of Wukong' children.
She doesn't manage to meet them until her release from the Scroll in S4. The Macaque had apparently been revived, and even under threat of his new master, had ensured his cubs and mate were kept safely together.
(*the Demon Bull Family are released from their Scrolls*) DBK, shuddering: "I did not care for those 500 years under that mountain. But at least I relived falling in love with you all over again." PIF, light blush: "My hopeless romantic." MK, sighs with relief: "Whew! Glad we didn't have to drag you guys out of a memory or anything." Mei, hugging Red Son: "Well except for ol' Red Boy here. He was so cute as a baby!" Red Son, embarrassed: "I was running around naked, setting the countryside ablaze!" DBK & PIF: (*"Aww" as they remember*) Mei: "Case in point; totes adorbs." Red Son: (*grumbling*) Wukong, holding a cub: "I'm just glad all of you are okay. Azure did not make it easy for us." Macaque, carrying the other two cubs: "Especially since the cubs tried to join in the fight." (*baby-talking to the cubs*) "Yes you did! You tried biting Peng's tail feathers off. Yes you did! You wanted to be like your Baba and fight the mean birdie!" Rumble & Savage: (*happily babbling chirps!*) PIF & DBK: (*looks at the scene with a mixture of adoring and sadness*) Thunder: (*silently hops out of Wukong's arms and toddles towards the Princess*) Thunder, holding up arms: "AH!" PIF, stunned: "...pardon?" Wukong, knowing smile: "He means Up. Thunder has been exercising getting farther away from me. He wants you to pick him up so he can properly say Hi." PIF: (*looking down at the cub, she silently lifts him into her arms. The tiny hands reaching up to inspect her horned hairstyle ala Maleficent 2014*) Thunder, amazed: "Ah!" PIF, smile slowly forming: "Hello little one. I've heard much about you." Thunder: (*sniffing her face and nuzzling against her cheek, making happy chirping sounds*) PIF: (*silent tears forming. She would fight Heaven for this baby*)
She about to ask Bull to try for another baby, cus gotdamn Wukong and Macaque's brood make her want at least three more.
just realised in my tummy-bug-ridden state, that Macaque is 100% one of those parents (or childminder in general) that sends ridiculous images whenever they're asked how the baby/children are doing.
Wukong, texting: "Just checking in! How are the cubs?" Macaque: (*sends photoshopped image of the baby monkeys and shadow cubs flying away on the Staff*) Macaque: "they doing fine :3" Wukong, panicking: "WHAT?!" Macaque: (*turns off phone*)
He will never stop. Even after Wukong beats the stuffing out of him for making him worry.
Now I'm picturing MK gushing at Macaque and talking about wanting to train with him only to hear a small chirp and whip around to see a monkey cub peaking out of his shadow, curiously peaking up at the new monkey.
Mk is instantly freaking out and picking the cub up, asking how long they'd been hiding there, if they're siblings are also hiding in the shadows, checking if they're hurt, all that while Macaque is staring in shock because that little cub has his powers, and looks a bit like Wukong, and what is happening?
Macaque manages to use his practice acting to throw on a mask and tell the human where to meet him for training all while the cub is now clinging to the human who apologizes for having to leave.
After watching the kid and cub leave Macaque let the glamor on his ears drop. Clearly there was something his "benefactor" was keeping from him and it was time the Six Eared Macaque actually used his ability to get some answers.

MK is so excited to be meeting another monkey demon like his mentor - especially since Wukong can't help much with training in his weakened state or with little cubs around.
Macaque plays it cool like in canon - up until he hears the cheeping in MK's shadow.
Rumble & Savage: (*happy chirping!*) MK, worried: "You two! I thought I told you to stay home with Monkey King!? Is Thunder here too? Did you get hurt when that smoke monster was smashing around?" Rumble & Savage: (*giggle as their big brother picks them up.*) MK: (*sighs with relief as he finds no injuries or third cub*) Macaque, dumbfounded: "They... they have shadow powers." MK, getting poked and pulled at: "Yeah, it can be a little annoying. Especially when these little explorers!" (*blows raspberry on their faces, as the twins squeal with laughter!*) Macaque: "...you say they live on Flower Fruit Mountain, right?" MK: "Heh, yeah. Monkey King can't teach me too much hard stuff cus the babies run him ragged." Macaque: "I can see why." (*thinks deeply*) "Ok. I'll be your mentor." MK, delighted: "Really!? You'll teach me?" Macaque: "Sure, why not? Looks like old Wukong needs someone to pick up the slack while the cubs are around." MK: "Oh thank you, thank you! I won't disappoint you Macaque!" Macaque: "I know you wont, bud. Just uh... make sure someone is holding onto these little guys when you get there." Rumble & Savage: (*reach out tiny hands towards this familiar monkey's face and ears. On closer inspection, they have Wukong's golden eyes, but one has multiple ears*) Macaque, spluttering: "Um! Uh... yeah. I'll pick you up for training tomorrow, k?" (*quickly leaves via portal*) MK, even more confused: "Ok??? Wow, what spooked him?" Rumble & Savage: (*sad that the new monkey is gone*) :'(
The second Macaque has a moment to think to himself, he's breathing into a paper bag.

Savage in the moons, Rumble in the sun and Thunder hiding behind them. And I just realized Savages hands shouldn’t have their thumbs showing… later problem. But here they are!
I almost forgot to post this, but it is so cute. Thunder looks the most like Wukong, albeit having four ears. Whilst the girls are twin mini-Macaques <3
Two furious little girls acting as bodyguards for their smaller brother. All wearing themed clothing - Sunset, Daytime, and Sunrise respectively!
Wukong is very proud of his babies.
The mixed version would be chaotic but also I can just see Thunder attaching himself to Wukong to finish his development, but not as an egg. Living shadow, he's not strong enough yet to leave Mama's side and so he lives in Wukong's shadow until he can form

Wukong finds the "shadows collapsed into newborns" twins first, but hears an odd, distressed cheeping when he tries digging around the Stone Palace for baby things.
He had thought Macaque left behind Two Shadows - one for his theatre supplies, and one for his weapons.
But it seems there was actually a Third - one he had posted outside of his and Wukong's shared nest. And Wukong had been accidentally neglecting this poor third shadow while feeding his dao/life energy to preserve it's siblings.
Wukong, without question, gathers the fading shadow clone into his arms - watching in stunned awe as the darkness bleeds into his own.
The chirping is louder now, coming from behind him.
When Wukong turns, he sees a silhouette of a baby monkey sitting in his shadow. The same shape as the two fully formed cubs on his back and chest.
It seems that where the older pair had "collapsed" into newborn monkeys, the third one needed more time and life energy to finish the job. So now Wukong has a miniature shadow clinging to him for most of S1 and maybe S2.
"Thunder" aka Pili, can't leave Wukong like Rumble (Zaoyin) and Savage (Baolie) can. They literally can't do much besides hug their Mama and absorb life energy until they finish growing. And even then it will be a great feat to convince Wukong's youngest triplet to leave his side!
Wukong likens the sensation to being hugged by a gust of air or piece of silk. The "feeding" process (probably looks like boob-feeding) is pretty draining though, so his magic is pretty depleted at the end of the day.
I'm also now imagining Thunder's big moment where they finally "breaks off" of their Mama's shadow - and everyone reacts like it's baby's first steps. Bonus if its during a big fight scene or capture.
Like when Wukong was webbed up to the Spider Mech with DBK.
Wukong & DBK: (*arguing*) Thunder: (*pops! out of shadow!*) Wukong & DBK: ( 0_0!) Wukong, gasps: "Oh!! My little thunderbolt! You managed to separate from my shadow!! I'm so proud!!" DBK, puzzled: "Wait, since when did you have a child hiding in your shadow?" Wukong: "EHhhh a couple of months, maybe a few years at least." DBK: "But the only person I recall to have such powers is the Macaque-" (*shocked pause*) "..did you and him have cubs!?" Wukong, blushing: "N-no! I just- I poured my dao into his shadow clones, and they sort of... turned into babies!" DBK: (*makes extreme "are you serious?" face*) Wukong: "...OK! That doesn't sound much better. But I couldn't just let his shadows fade away - they're like, the last scraps of him I had of him before..." DBK, sympathetic: "I understand, xiandi. But clearly you realised that by pouring your heavenly life energy into a vessel of dark created by your mate would combine into a whole creature?" Wukong, thinking: "Ohhhhh so that explains why it happened!" DBK: "YOU DIDN'T KNOW!?" Wukong: "I HAD MY HANDS FULL WITH TRIPLETS!" DBK: "IT HAPPENED THRICE!?!" Thunder, confused and scared: (*sad geckering noises*) Wukong, lowers voice: "Oh no, sweetie! I'm not mad at you! Mama is just really stuck right now and he's cranky. i just need to find a way to-" DBK: (*breaks through his and Wukong's bindings to comfort the scared baby*) Wukong, completely stunned as he hugs Thunder: "Thanks!?" DBK, pleased hum: "I'm a father too, you know."
I dont know what I like better in the Penumbra Au; Wukong preserving Macaque's leftover shadow clones with so much of his own Dao/Life Energy that:
A: The shadows collaspe into themselves like black holes and *pop!* out as tiny obsidian Stone Eggs and/or newborn monkeys. B: The shadows become new souls, but need bodies so they hop into their "Mama" to finish cooking. C: Mixture of both. Rumble & Savage being "collasping shadows" that popped into existence, and Thunder (the 3rd LMK concept art baby) needing to finish baking cus Wukong didn't know Mac left a 3rd shadow behind to watch his stuff.
I'm leaning towards the C option cus it seems the most chaotic. Wukong was so desperate to keep a trace of Macaque around that he not only accidentally made two whole babies, but got himself pregnant with a third! XD
Also imagine the reactions of everyone else;
MK getting pounced on by a pair of baby monkeys who want to show him off to their Mama - only for said Mama to be a very tired Monkey King.
MK: "I...! I really didn't expect this to be honest." Wukong, in pyjamas: "Same here, they just sorta happened. And they're why I need a successor." MK: "wut?" Babies: (*happy, curious chirping sounds!*)
not to mention people who knew Wukong back in the day!
DBK: "Xiandi! Since when were you and the Macaque parents!?" Wukong, exhausted: "I don't remember." DBK: "THAT BRINGS UP FURTHER QUESTIONS!"
