THE PREMISE:

A wizard and his apprentice venture out to start a magical ritual, but only the apprentice is left to complete it after ten years in the future- after the wizard has passed away.

Treatment:

The apprentice is sleeping peacefully. Suddenly, the Wizard kicks down the bedroom door and loudly proclaims that they must go on an adventure. He carries a large mechanical telescope on his back. The apprentice wakes up and expresses confusion and annoyance. The Wizard plops the telescope into the apprentice’s arms. The two walk through the apartment, putting on jackets and picking up their wands, making sure they have everything. The Wizard and apprentice walk outside to find a dewy, sunny morning. They travel through the lush hills, and the Wizard runs ahead out of excitement. The apprentice calls after him to take it easy, but the Wizard starts coughing. The apprentice catches up to the wizard and pats him on the back. He looks concerned. The Wizard continues to move forward. The Telescope is taken off the back of the apprentice and is set up by the Wizard. The telescope clicks and whirs, and the Wizard places a flat stone in the center. The sun is slowly being passed over by the moon, but not completely. The moon is too small, and makes the sun look like a glowing ring. The light from the partial eclipse passes through the telescope and burns a hole in the stone. The Wizard gives the Apprentice the pendant and promises that they will complete the ritual in 10 years. He says that once they do, something beautiful will happen.

⏳TIMESKIP⌛️

The apprentice wakes up, ten years older. His room is dark. He rises in bed, exhausted. As if he barely got any sleep. The walls are lined with papers full of research, and there is a calendar with today's date circled in red pen. The apprentice slogs through the apartment picking up his equipment and glancing over the Wizard’s shrine. He puts on the Wizard’s scarf. He raises the telescope onto his back and walks outside. The apprentice walks through the misty, gloomy hills. He keeps his head down and moves forward. The total eclipse has started. The apprentice sets up the telescope, but the light of the sun starts to disappear. Deep gray storm clouds start to move in. The apprentice starts to panic. He flings spells at the sky, as if to get them to go away. The clouds become thicker, and the sun is gone. but he crumples down to the ground sobbing. The sky darkens from the total eclipse that he cannot see. Slowly, the pendant starts to glow. The apprentice looks up from his hands to the horizon, where he sees the edge of the shadow the eclipse is casting. Sunlight dances in the distance. He remembers how the wizards' hair danced like sunlight. The sun shines on the horizon and the apprentice looks upon it in awe. A teardrop falls from the apprentice’s cheek and is caught by the pendant.

Logline: Human beings since the beginning of human existence, before the year 2024, are anonymously summoned as the Spirala and thus lead college students from Concord, New Hampshire, to form a club called the Sanctuary that encourages ambitious individuals to become Sanctuary Students as members to interact with the spiritual and abnormal embodiment of history in hopes that the present can learn from the past to create a brighter future.

This is for the short story series as a whole, not one individual story.
