Yeoman Longbowstoats of the House Lancaster
Chest of longbows and arrows which were stored on the lowermost deck in the stern of the Mary Rose, before 1545
All of the longbows are made from a single piece of yew containing the junction between the unyielding centre (heartwood) and the very bendy (sapwood) towards the outside of the tree or branch. The staves are shaped by the bowyer to increase the bend in the sapwood whilst maintaining the strength of the heartwood, creating a perfect, natural spring.
The length varies from 1839mm to 2113mm. The cross- section is mostly D-shaped, and at the centre of the bow about 35mm wide and 33mm deep. Draw-weights suggested are between 65 and 175 pounds, with a peak at 110 pounds.

A study by UK archaeologists finds that longbows caused horrific injuries similar to modern gunshot wounds.
Much of what we know about medieval warfare and injuries has come from sites like those linked to the Battle of Visby in Gotland, Sweden in 1361, and the Battle of Towton in North Yorkshire in England in 1461. Experiments have also been performed with replicas based on 16th-century longbow examples but the new paper says they did not give the full picture of how the weapons operated and what damage they could cause. The UK scientists focused their research on osteologicalor bone-related evidence to arrive at crucial new details.
While drawing upon previous studies of medieval warfare, the archaeological detectives analyzed 22 bone fragments and three teeth from the burial ground of a Dominican friary in Exeter, consecrated in 1259. They discovered a cranium with a puncture wound that started above the right eye and went all the way to the back of the head. By examining the structural elements of the wound, the researchers believe it was caused by an arrow that was spinning clockwise when it slammed into the head.

Different Types of Bows
Archery is a very ancient form of sport. Bow and arrow are not only used for sports purpose, but people also used to hunt animals to gather foods for them.
Bows were used for survival reasons centuries ago. But now people use a bow for sports and hunting purpose. Science has transformed bows a lot. You can see various types of bows nowadays. Some of them are good for hunting and some for the archery range.
In this post, I will talk about a different kind of bows.
Different types of bows
There are mainly four types of bows you will see these days. They are:
Recurve bow
Compound bow
Longbow and
Crossbow
In this article, I will describe these four type of bows briefly:
Recurve bow
Recurve bows are historical. They were used by horsemen, and modern versions of the bow are used in Olympic events and many archery events. These bows are named for their particular shape: the central parts of the limbs curve towards the archer who is operating it, and the top of the limbs curve away from the archer. This feature gives the bow more power, and less strength is needed to use the bow. Recurve bows are good for teaching archery, and beginners often start with a recurve bow which only has a string, an arrow rest, bow limbs and a riser. It helps to balance the bow. As you become more expert, you can add some more features to your bows such as sight, pressure button, clicker, and stabilizer.
Compound bow
Compound bows are a little complex and the construction is a little hard. You can easily guess that from the name of this bow.
Compound bows were first introduced in the 1960s. This bow is consist of cables, pulleys, and cams which helps you to hold the bow even in heavy draw weight at full draw.
All these excellent features allow you to have some more time than usual to aim at your target. Compound bows are more powerful than other bow types. They allow you to shoot the arrow at a very high speed. Among the different type of bows for hunting, compound bows are very familiar among the hunters these days.
Because the operation of this bow is a little complex, it is not very suitable for the beginners.
Longbows
Among all the other bows, longbows are the simplest one. Longbows were first introduced to us in the battle of 1298. It was very familiar and effective in the battlefield until the 16th century.
As you can easily guess the size of the bow from the name, these bows are long in size. They can be of the same size as the archer. It is made of a single piece of wood which is slightly curved. There is no bow sight and arrow rest in this bow. So, it is quite difficult for the archer to aim with this bow. You need to do a lot of practice to shoot accurately with this bow. But some people still love to use this bow because they love the thrill of using an ancient bow. The love to face the challenge.
Crossbows
Crossbows are originated in China. These bows were commonly used in battle in the Greco-Roman and Medieval ages. You can still find some Chinese archers using this type of bow.
Crossbows are generally looked like a modern firearm but have a short bow horizontally attached at the muzzle. The bows are drawn by a crank mechanism. After that, the string is then attached to the trigger mechanism and locked in place. It remains like that until the archer fires the bow.
Their firing range is short. They need heavier draw weights to perform like a compound bow or a recurve bow. These bows are frequently used for target archery ranges. But some states and countries don’t allow this bow in their competitions.
There is a different type of bows for hunting, but this one is not so preferable for the job.
Conclusion
If you have the proper knowledge about the different bow and arrow types, it will become a lot easier for you to choose the perfect one for your prospective work. Each of the bow types I described above is good to use in different situation and task. I hope you will find the information useful while choosing a bow for you.
