A Different Kind of Poem

You can write me a poem baby, if you want.

You can write me a poem baby, as many as you like.

You can write me a poem baby, every day and night.

But Sweetie,

You don’t have to write me a poem filled with words.

You don’t have to compose sonnets or limericks, or whatever kinds of poems there are.

You don’t have to use thousands of pretty words.

You don’t have to talk about the moon and the sky.

You don’t have to say I’m an angel.

You don’t have to say I’m your every breath.

You don’t have to say anything.

No.

You don’t have to say or write pretty sweet words.

Not just yet.

Baby, I’d rather you write me a different kind of poem.

Write a poem for me with not your words, but your actions.

You don’t always have to say you care a thousand different ways.

Show me that you care.

I’d rather hear that poem.

The poem you write should say I can trust you, show me I can trust you.

Keep my secrets.

Smile and laugh sweetly at my quirks.

Show patience when I don’t understand.

Don’t ridicule or put me down.

Don’t harshly judge me when I show you my scars.

Don’t laugh at me when I tell you about the monsters that follow me.

Hold me so I feel safe with you.

Hold me close and kiss my lips.

Hold my hand and walk beside me.

Laugh with me.

See the world with me.

The poem you write should say you will be faithful to me.

Look only at me.

Now I don’t mean stare at me.

See me, and only me.

See me for who I am.

Search for me, look for me, don’t give up on me.

Because there will be times where I will hide.

Because there will be times when I will try to hide from the world.

Because there will be times when those monsters I told you about will take me.

Because there will be times that I will run from everything.

When that happens, don’t stop searching for me.

When that happens, don’t give up on me.

When that happens, don’t avoid the labyrinth covered in thorns.

When that happens, don’t walk away.

Look for me, search for me, call for me in that labyrinth.

Find me and run to me.

When that happens and you finally find me, then speak sweetly.

Say those pretty words in a pretty poem,

because it will be the sequel to that beautiful poem you already wrote for me.

You know which one, right?

The one where you showed you cared for me first,

before you said those words.

The words, “I love you.”
