Around the beginning of the fourth season of 'Here's Lucy', production had moved from Paramount Studios to Universal Studios. Along with her new digs, an area backstage of the HL set was constructed called Lucy Lane. According to TV Guide (December 1971), it's creation 'grew out of a rebellion against the old Hollywood tradition that backstage offices should provide a properly hideous contrast to the stars' dressing rooms. Lucy is almost obsessively loyal to her staff, who have been with her for so long, that they are more like family, than hired help, and she wanted something better for them. So her husband, Gary Morton and art director, Ray Beal combined talents to produce the 'street' which includes offices and dressing rooms for the regulars and guest stars.' 'Universal offers her a better rental deal, and builds her an area called Lucy Lane with special decorations that houses her own special hair, makeup, and wardrobe departments, as well as a private dressing bungalow, and one on display for the studio tourists to see.' It was a gift from the stage crew to Lucy. Decked out with flashy Lucy stores and boutiques, it looked like a dazzling replica of Main Street USA.'—I Had A Ball by Michael Stern (on his first meeting with Lucy) 'I got to go backstage to a place called Lucy Lane which Universal built for her behind the set. There was a boutique shop and a hair and makeup place, it looked like a street. No one really saw it but the cast and crew.'—Michael Stern, TV Party! Television's Untold Stories by Bill Ingram 'I did get sad moving from the lot my parents had owned to Universal Studios. Even though they built this great thing called Lucy Lane, it just wasn't the same for me.'—Lucie Arnaz, The Lucy Book by Geoffrey Mark Fidelman. #lucilleball #universalstudios #paramountstudios #hereslucy #lucylane #backstage #dressingrooms #studiotour #behindthescenes #boutique #classichollywood #luciearnaz #ontheset #classictv #classictvshow https://www.instagram.com/p/CSCujUuljVy/?utm_medium=tumblr
