Many spoilery thoughts below

I tried to have the reading order (which, if I’d had it as a physical copy and not a collection of PDFs, would have been the normal reading order) be from what I assumed would be my least favorites to my favorites (not in terms of the ship but what I knew about each story) except for City of Broken Hearts (the title and premise were collectively too awesome for me not to read it first), Too Wise to Love (I saw a mild spoiler on tumblr and decided I had to read it right away), The Judgement of King Kieran since I should have read that one after Zachary’s Day Out but forgot about it, and A Surfeit of Anna’s bc I couldn’t find it until recently.

I love Thomastair but based on what information I knew of their short story I wasn’t expecting to like it the most and I was correct. I liked the exploration of Alastair’s character especially of how he was forced to grow up too soon and how he acts towards Zachary in the only way he knows how, his father’s way. But otherwise, the plot just wasn’t for me. I stress a lot when characters get in trouble so Alastair and Thomas running around London trying to get Zachary back was nerve-wracking for me and not in the fun “I’m on the edge of my seat and loving the suspense” way. However I did love all the cute moments of them living together. Them developing the habit of sharing a kiss before walking out the door is so adorable.

City of Broken Hearts was great! “Ice queen and toad guy” made me laugh a lot. I like that the story showed how both of them had reasons to be insecure in their relationship, Simon bc he thinks Isabelle’s out of his league and Isabelle because she has trouble trusting people because of Maryse confiding in her about Robert cheating (and given how their relationship started with Simon two-timing her and Maia I understand her). There was a demon queen loose in New York making couples break up and exacerbating their existing issues while Sizzy were going through a major fight about the future of their relationship and they came out of it stronger than before by reaffirming their love and commitment to one another (which was already there) by getting engaged. I just love them so so much! And the “I love you” “I know” parallel was wonderful.

I also think Malec would have been a slightly better choice than Clace to go talk to Max Trueblood. Sure, the Consul knocking on his door would have been really intimidating, but they have more experience with the Clave/other Shadowhunters disapproving of their relationship since Clace only started officially going out after CoG and by then they knew they weren’t siblings. I didn’t dislike the short story by any means and thought it was nice how Clary won Max over since she grew up in the mundane world.

I really liked The Beautiful Ajatara. Since in the Instagram post where she announced the titles and the couples Cassandra Clare said it would be about Herondaisy I didn’t expect it to be from Lucie’s POV but I really enjoyed it, despite the characters being used as mouthpieces for the author (which seems to be an unpopular opinion).

It was a fun concept to have her finish the Beautiful Cordelia with James and Cordelia inside the story, and I love how it wrapped up Lucie’s storyline better. I really love Lucie (she’s one of the reasons why Chain of Iron is one of my favorite TSC books even if her storyline in Chain of Thorns disappointed me) and I’m glad I got to read more from her POV.

Bred in the Bone nearly gave me a heart attack from the shock of its exposition and this is saying something given I read it shortly after I was woken up at 4am in my hotel room by an alarm telling everyone to evacuate (it was a false alarm dw, I’m okay).

Diana (to Emma) : I saw Julian at a nightclub kissing another girl

Me : noooo absolutely not Julian would never! This is character assassination!! There must be an explanation!!

Also, how did Diana recognise Julian but not see the girl he was kissing was Emma ? Thule!Emma sure but she still looks like Emma.

I also find it odd that Janus was trying to summon Raphael from Thule and got Emma instead. You could argue that it was because of her thirst for vengeance but other than her motivation for leaving Thule and hunt down Julian, she has no link whatsoever to Raphael and it makes no sense. It’s as if every time a warlock summoned a demon, a more motivated demon was summoned instead. Demon summonings would always have frustrating outcomes and be unreliable.

Also, I loved Blackstairs so so much in their short story, just as I did in Secrets of Blackthorn Hall. It’s not that I don’t like their romance in TDA, but I like them way better now that they’re a couple than when they couldn’t be together in their series. I love seeing them be happy.

Nene’s short story was one of my favorites. Her backstory is so interesting and so tragic. I can’t even imagine how painful losing my sister would be for me, much less all six (I know one of them is still alive but given she keeps hurting Nene I’d say she’s lost her too). The fact that Ash has green eyes was news to me but when I found out I was so emotional. He has Clary’s eyes, and the eyes that Jonathan would have had. The ones he had right before dying. And Ash taught Nene that to love is not to destroy, and that you can open your heart and not have it end badly the way Clary did for Jace (Green to mend our broken hearts 💚). The fact that Nerissa decided to send her children to the Los Angeles Institute because they deserved to be loved and Nene wasn’t ready to give them the love they needed yet. And then Nene realises she loved them all along (and then when Mark and his friends need help in Faerie she comes to their rescue)

I hope we see more of Nene in TWP, especially scenes with Ash and Mark and Helen. Helen remembers Nerissa so I wonder if she vaguely remembers her aunt as well. (I feel like Nene might die in TWP at the end of the second book or halfway through the third book to tie up her character arc of accepting that love is worth the risk by sacrificing herself for Ash or for Mark and Helen. I don’t want her to but I feel like it might happen.)

I like that we got to see how Kieran rules the Unseelie court and how Mark and Cristina feel about having to live in two separate places and constantly miss the people they love.

I had completely forgotten about the teaser quote with the “I’m married ?” thing. It was ironic for Will, who uses his Mnemosyne rune to effortlessly recite book quotes (as one does when one is a dramatic book loving Herondale, I wish I had a Mnemosyne rune. I am very forgetful) to lose his memories. But I guess the idea of losing your memories of your loved ones is intrinsically linked to Will and Tessa and Jem (forgetting the exact blue of his eyes etc). I did like the moral of that short story, about how pain is an essential part of life and love and happiness, and how life without pain may seem appealing (especially for someone like Will who has lost so much) but it means you miss out on so much of life.

I know I reread TMI not that long ago but frankly my memories of the exact events of how Jocelyn and Luke’s story happens were hazy enough for me to believe the version given by Who the Wolf Loves was the correct one until I saw people on tumblr saying it wasn’t. I wasn’t in the best mood when I read that short story bc I was jet lagged and tired so this probably affected my enjoyment of it. Might revise it later. I don’t hate it by any means though.

I liked A Surfeit of Anna’s a lot. I like that we got to see a small glimpse of Matthew and Sylvain. (Ari + Anna + Matthew + Sylvain double dates would be amazing!)

In general I liked the message behind each short story (tell me if I’m wrong)

• pain is an essential part of life and love, and makes happiness sweeter. Forgetting or avoiding it is not the answer - The Good Storm

• what comes after you get together (where romance stories typically cut off) isn’t the boring part it’s the one you should look forward to, because it signals the beginning of something else - The Beautiful Ajatara

• love comes with many types of obstacles, and you need to trust the person you love in order to get through them together and come out stronger. Also, this short story had very “But Daddy I Love Him” by Taylor Swift vibes in the sense that Ari and Anna were essentially telling the haters and people who didn’t believe in their love/in Anna’s commitment to mind their own business and that they’re wrong. - A Surfeit of Anna’s

• even if it’s scary, you have to trust that the person you love won’t leave you and that they love you as much as you love them - City of Broken Hearts

• love is complicated, and people who love each other can hurt each other a lot too. But it’s always worth it to choose love - The Time of Two

• childhood is such a beautiful, precious part of life that we often regret if we grow up too soon - Zachary’s Day Out

• if you love someone for selfish reasons, you want them for yourself and yourself only but if your love is selfless, then you love that person and who they love too, because they’re part of their heart and self - Who the Wolf Loves

• love is unconditional, if you love someone it’s at their best and at their worst, even the parts they’re scared to show you - The Judgement of King Kieran

• loving someone the way Endarkened Emma and Julian loved each other (loving only each other, believing that dividing your heart means you love someone less, a love that is cataclysmic and all-consuming) isn’t a better love than the one our world’s Emma and Julian have, filled with softness and domestic bliss. Emma doesn’t just love Julian, and Julian doesn’t just love Emma, and yet their love is just as powerful. - Bred in the Bone

• love makes you vulnerable and opens you up to pain, loss and disappointment, but it’s worth it anyway - Too Wise To Love

There is heavy foreshadowing for lots of stuff happening in TWP and lots of raising the stakes. How all these issues are meant to be resolved I have no clue. Poor Ty, Kit, Dru and Ash (+ their friends) are going to have a lot on their plates.

• there’s the prophecy Max Trueblood gave Clary and Jace about the end of Shadowhunters after the Clave is split in two (my autocorrect corrected it to Clace. I choose to believe that does not mean anything because surely Clace will be happy together forever)

• Janus being up to lots of things, trying to summon Raphael (I am once again begging Cassandra Clare not to let anything bad happen to Lily Chen), becoming the Huntsman and the Seelie Queen’s lover (I am very confused about this but mostly imagine the comedic potential of one of the Queen’s attendants or something mistaking Jace for Janus and saying he’s the Queen’s lover. Also, Ms Seelie Queen, respectfully, you should stop going after guys whose first choice is Clary but can’t have her so choose you as the next best thing.)

• Thule!Emma seems very sure that Janus is about to destroy the world from what is probably a very short interaction with him and this worries me

• Mark and Cristina telling Kieran they think soon a High King will relieve him of his duties as the Unseelie King so he can be free to live full time in their cottage

Anna Lightwood + Ariadne Bridgestock: Listen, there’s a lot of society going on right now, so we’re going to have to get together in secret. Oh, you don’t want to? Okay, never mind, fuck society, let me win you back real quick.

Thomas Lightwood + Alastair Carstairs: I’d really like to hate you, but I think the biggest problem with that is that I love you. Once I get over that hurdle, I think we’ll be in the clear.

Simon Lovelace + Isabelle Lightwood: It makes sense to have our engagement party on the day of my brother’s death, that’s when we really started bonding.

Helen “Alessa” Blackthorn + Aline Penhallow: Well, I guess we’re going to go in exile together. Yes, I said together; your exile is my exile, what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine, that’s how relationships work.

Julian Blackthorn + Emma Carstairs: Yes, it’s a technical war crime to love each other, but the law itself is not really our main concern about it.

Kieran Hunter + Mark “Miach” Blackthorn + Cristina Rosales: We’re really living that cottage core aesthetic, and all we had to do to get here was do a small war and some amnesia. Worth it.

Gwyn ap Nudd + Diana Wrayburn: I’m going to stand by just in case something happens, but it probably won’t, she knows what she’s doing – WHY IS SHE JUMPING OUT THE TENTH STORY WINDOW OH MY GOD WAIT

Tiberius “Ty” Blackthorn + Christopher “Kit” Herondale: We take cosplaying Sherlock and Watson VERY seriously, so of course we needed to go to all the most illegal places, it’s only natural.

Top 5 TSC ships?👀

Thank you for the ask! I’m so glad you asked me this but I am going to have such a hard time picking favorites because there are so many great ones.

1. Malec - they’re universally beloved by the fandom for a reason, I love them so so much (happy late birthday to Alec Lightwood)

2. Herongraystairs - in 2022 I did a ranking for my favorite ships and 2022 me, who had only just joined the TSC fandom that year, put Herongraystairs in second right after my OG first ship I ever shipped (Percabeth) because that was how much reading the Clockwork Princess epilogue and just TID in general impacted me. The idea of an immortal love that endures time and death was new to me and I cried when I read the epilogue at 3am in my room (I still remember that 3 years later). So yeah I can’t not put Herongraystairs up here. It’s been a while since I read TID I should probably reread it next year

3. Blackstairs - my TDA reread + reading Secrets of Blackthorn Hall for the first time really gave me a new appreciation for their ship (I loved them before but now even more). Also, I’m a huge sucker for friends to lovers

4. Jordelia/Herondaisy - half the reason why Chain of Iron is in my top 5 TSC books. (It’s been a while since I’ve reread TLH though, might reread it next year) I do love my slow burn romances

5. Clace - I love them a lot, and for good reason, they just keep getting better with every book and they’re the OG. That said, they’re not always the first that come to mind when I think of my favorite ships.

Honorable mentions :

Haline - I love them so much even if they don’t have that much page time. In fact, I love them so much that even if it’s false advertising when I wanted to convince my friends to read TSC I sent them a fanart of Haline

Lukelyn- again, I am a sucker for childhood friends to lovers and very very slow burns

Sizzy - I can’t not put them in this list, I love them.

KitTy - can’t wait for TWP I love these two

Thomastair - their BiB short story reminded me of how much I love them and now I really want to reread TLH
