thinking about how out of the two winchester parents, the only one dean ever said "i hate you" to was mary (in a dream-like state, yes, but still). because of her barely-informed choice, ten years before the brothers were even born, she died, orphaning her children, widowing her husband.

but it was john who doomed their bloodline — his and mary's — to a life of transience, of abdication. a family ravaged by grief, a man with his two sons turned funeral procession. a mother means the most, and absence makes the heart grow fonder, doesn't it? john noticed the yawning maw where mary would have once fit perfectly; he tried to fill it with alcohol, fits of rage, revenge-powered hunting — he even tried to fill it with absence. sam and dean were raised on it.

sand slips through fingers, it crumbles under pressure. but mary is, has always been, will always be so much more than these pesky material possessions, these feelings. she gives life, she takes it away. it's the role of a mother, after all.

even though sam and dean were raised on inadequacies, by their father, who quite often abandoned the ship and left the rudder to his eldest, when he's asked, "did you love your father?", without a beat he goes, "with everything i had."

maybe he doesn't even hate mary: what he hates is the impossibility of normalcy, which is the stigma of the mother — their mother.

"Changing Angelica Sedara"

"CHANGING ANGELICA SEDARA"

Upon a rewatch of "THE LEOPARD", Netflix's 2025 adaptation of Giueseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s 1958 novel, I have noticed a few changes that I found disturbing. One of those changes featured one Angelica Sedara, the daughter of a local Sicilian politician, who becomes involved with aristocratic Salinas and Falconeri families.

Lampedusa had portrayed Angelica in his novel as the beautiful daughter of the ambitious mayor of mayor of Donnafugata and a newly rich landowner, Don Calogero Sedara. She and her father became acquainted of Fabrizio Corbèra, Prince of Salina; his family and the Prince's equally ambitious nephew, Prince Tancredi Falconeri. Some time following the landing of revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi and his troops on Sicily, Prince Salina and his family traveled to his summer estate in Donnafugata. There, they discovered Don Sedara had become wealthy through dodgy business transactions and political influence. At a luncheon hosted by Prince Salina, Don Sedara introduced his daughter Angelica to the aristocratic family. Tancredi became smitten with her, to the dismay of the Prince's daughter Concetta, who loves her cousin. Although aware of his daughter's feelings, the Prince accepted the inevitable and helped arrange Tancredi's betrothal to Angelica. In a twist different from the novel and the 1963 movie adaptation, Tancredi and Angelica were married in Episode Four.

Not long after the young couple's marriage, they move to Turin, the capital of the newly unified Italy. Sometime after the death of his oldest son, Paolo, the Prince received an offer to become a senator in Episode Five. He and Concetta stayed at Tancredi and Angelica's new home. During this visit, both father and daughter discovered the couple's new marriage had transformed into a loveless one, when they realized the one thing they truly shared was ambition. The Prince had also Angelica having a sexual tryst with some French ambassador. After the Prince confronted Tancredi about this, the latter admitted he knew about his wife's "transgressions" and accepted them, because her trysts helped advance his political ambitions. The Prince eventually learned from Angelica that Tancredi had began cheating on her not long after the honeymoon. The miniseries' last episode featured a brief scene of Angelica engaged in a sexual tryst with another politician.

All I can say is . . . WHAT THE HELL? Why on earth did the screenwriters for "THE LEOPARD", Richard Warlow and Benji Walters, decide to transform Angelica into some kind of political whore for her husband? What was the point of this change in Angelica's character? Granted, she had one affair during her marriage to Tancredi in the novel. But it happened years later and only once . . . with an old friend of Tancredi's. The latter had been sexually unfaithful to her for years. But the literary Angelica had never continuously cheated on Tancredi out of some kind of revenge or inadvertently prostitute herself to other men, on behalf of her husband's ambitions.

So, why did Warlow and Walters make this toxic change to Angelica's character? To enhance Concetta's standing in the saga? To make Lampedusa's saga more salacious? Or did they make this change to convey some message that ambitious women are naturally promiscuous? Who knows? It might be latter. I had once come across an online comment that Angelica's willingness to have sex with other men on behalf of Tancredi's career seemed like a clear indication of how far women are willing to go in regard to their ambitions. I nearly threw up after reading that particular passage. Then again, this change in Angelica's characterization may have originated from a combination of all three - to enhance Concetta's character, make the story more . . . "sexy" and convey some toxic opinion on ambitious women.

As I had earlier stated, no such scenario regarding Angelica Sedara aka Princess Falconeri prostituting herself on behalf of her husband's political ambitions existed in Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel. Nor did it exist in Luchino Visconti's 1963 film. Not only did I find the screenwriters' decision to transform Angelica into some kind of whore very disturbing, but also misogynist. But what I found even more disturbing were the reactions to this particular change. Or better yet . . . the lack of reactions to this change. Especially from the more progressive articles and blogs, which I believe should have complained about how Warlow and Walters had spoon fed this ridiculous Madonna/Whore nonsense to television viewers.

I feel like Kory isn't taken seriously, or her relationship with Dick, by current writers, because of a Madonna-Whore complex.

And Barbara is like the madonna in this case (I'm not talking about shippers, in fact I don't have much interaction with them either, but you can like friends to lovers, childhood sweetheart, first crush, second chance, so this ship you, makes sense), to the point of not even taking the feelings of both of them, Dick for Kory and she for him, seriously.

"It was just sex, they had it a lot", ok, if you have sex with your partner "a lot", then your connection no longer has romantic value? Romantic attraction and sexual attraction are different, and a couple can have both high, just because sexual attraction is high doesn't mean there isn't much romantic love. Just because Kory isn't usually jealous doesn't mean she doesn't love.

She has a different view of love and sex, one that doesn't really condemn women who love intensely and desire freely like we have here. But it seems she deserves to be punished for this. 🤷

It's like Kory is all about the fun and the party, and Barbara is the model wife, so their relationship can have layers (I'm glad the cheating is no longer canon), and not with Kory, it is dispensable, cuz she does not have the "correct values" of a "good woman".

She's there to be pretty and that's it.

How to take a relationship with a bimbo seriously?

Being a bimbo has a negative connotation in the madonna-whore complex, but nowadays? I thought we were past that. She can be a bimbo and be an interesting character, there is a lot to explore with her. She's an ALIEN, FOR GOD'S SAKE!

She's a bimbo (kind of not, but close to that) and Dick is a himbo (kind of not either, but also close), So the two of them together is really cute.

And I love that she's taller than him, and they're all over eachother, it's like a golden retriever finds another golden retriever, and they're in love (well, he was a black cat as Robin, but he softened over time)

Most of us saw the animation and were enchanted by it, isn't it curious that in a children's animation, since they couldn't just objectify her, they found plots for her?

I'm not talking about everyone, there are those who like Kory and writing her, or in the old comics, but... you know what I mean?

It's one thing to not have your m/m or f/f ships far from being canon, but to have a f/m canon, that in canon writers love to shit on it, is a totally different frustration.

Even more so when it's one of your female characters that you grew up adoring, being despised like this.

Well... we have fanfics, so 🫶

(I'm not particularly a fan of the triangle, between the two couples I like Dick/Kory more for many reasons other than the ones I listed. I like Dick and Kory together. But DickBabsKory is a ship I DO LIKE. I'm surprised it's not canon in any universe... it only exists in fanfics.. You know, the world of fanfics is a blessing in many ways)
