Claude/AI Detector Parent Skin

I've seen this tweet from @heatedrivalryai on X sharing how to add Claude/AI detector notification when you click on a fic that's been generated by Claude AI. So i made my own version where you can have the AI Detector as a parent skin for your custom site skins. A fic that's has been detected using Claude AI will have little red "You got a call from “Claude”!" notification on it. Please excuse my low quality screenshot.

Here's the code and click here for testing if it's working or not.

How to add parent skin :

Create a new site skin and give it a unique title.

Copy this code to the CSS.

Go to "Advanced" and click "Show↓".

✓ Parent Only option.

Now go to your custom site skin, and go to "Advanced" scroll until you see "Parent Skins".

"Add Parent Skin" and type your AI detector title to the area text below the "Parent #whatevernumber" and chose the little pop of your title.

"Submit" and you're done!

Claude AI-Detecting AO3 Site Skin

Hello hello! Some of you have probably seen the info about the Claude-detecting AO3 skin. I find it useful, but the way it was shared didn't suit my needs, so I tied it in with the standard Reversi site skin to make a version that works better for me. I'm sharing it if you want to use it too!

As always, this is an optional tool. You don't have to use it if you don't like it. This is a site skin, so all it does is affect what AO3 looks like on your own account - it doesn't change what your readers see.

This skin looks like Reversi by default. On any fic where it detects a 100% clear snippet of Claude AI generated text, it will light the fic up bright red. Still readable if you wanna keep going, but now you know that fic contains bits of Claude AI.

It does NOT:

Detect other AI, only Claude!

Change anything for other people - just you.

Flag EVERY Claude-generated fic. If the poster took the time to clean up the writing even a little, it will not flag with this tool even if it was written entirely by Claude.

Have false positives. There is no reason for this to light up a fic unless some or all of it was copied and pasted directly from Claude.

Give you a reason to harass people, even if they made a shitty choice to use AI in their fic.

I did not write this CSS myself! The person who discovered/shared this provided a small snippet of code to use to do this, and I just stuck it onto Reversi so I could have a skin that still looks nice. I am choosing not to link directly to the creator's document because that document seems to double as a callout post for various writers, and I'm not big on that. If you really wanna see it, you'll find it with an easy Google search.

There we go with another ao3 japenese skin aesthetic stylish (?) I don't how to call it, It's just felt fitting you know?

Does anyone have the ai detection skin but for dark mode (reversi)

I tried to make the skin but it's only for light mode, and I famously suck at comsci

I feel like i want to say something here since i made this mistake before. The Claude AI Detector that's been throwing around, there's a few version that's been popping up after the original @heatedrivalryai posted.

Please make sure the code has "userstuff p.font-claude-response-body" instead of another html such as "userstuff p[class*="claude"]". The latter would scan any "class" that has the word "claude" in it while the first is a hidden html class by Claude AI assistant.

For example, make a draft and type this before you put any random paragraph.

If you use the latter, the userstuff would get triggered and you will get an AI notice, while if you use the first userstuff the AI Detector wouldn't pop up at all.

I have a hard time with first-person narratives featuring characters who bury their feelings

First-person narration with two points of view is very popular in romance novels. For me, it's a nightmare to make the first-person narration sound natural for a character who doesn't talk much and who isn't very in touch with his feelings—a character who is burying everything he feels, even if unconsciously.

I think I’d cry and throw up while trying to write in the first person with characters like Lan Wangji and Shen Yuan.

Lan Wangji isn’t a character who expresses himself much with words, so… how could I not come across as cringe writing in the first person with him?

I read a novel with a male lead like him once—it was a BG novel set in the U.S.—and when the narrative shifted from the woman protagonist to him... I almost put the book down. I cringed immediately.

Which is ironic because a quiet person’s mind is typically noisy. But when they’re describing their thoughts, it sounds like a monologue being delivered to us, and it sounds so… strange.

An omniscient third-person narrator makes it seem as if the narrator is opening up the character’s mind and recounting what’s inside for them—all the confusion in there—which sounds easier and more natural to me.

I think I could write in first person with Wei Wuxian, but if I had to switch the POV to Lan Wangji, I’d switch to third person.

I’ve already written a short fanfic about them; I kept it all in omniscient third person—it was more like “p rn with feelings.” I do enjoy much more third person to be honest, as I said here.

Shen Yuan isn't the type to be quiet; he has a busy mind, too, but even within that mind, he prefers to avoid his own feelings (I can totally relate—how embarrassing).

I think an intrusive, omniscient third-person narrative is where I feel most comfortable with him. It would be kind of like letting Shen Yuan figure out his own feelings on his own, and pointing out his contradictions every now and then, making fun of him. I think an intrusive third-person narrative works really well for humor.

But I can see how first-person narration could work—letting readers figure out on their own that he thinks X and tells us so, but his actions are actually Y the whole time.

Even though the novel is written in the third person, this was still applied—we often saw his thoughts presented in indirect speech, the narration was from his point of view, and a lot is left between the lines, especially in his actions. It’s only toward the end that Shen Qingqiu becomes more open about his feelings, because he’s finally come to understand them and feels a little less ashamed.

He’s a millennial who cringes at the slightest thing.

Personally, I have fun using the third person when writing about him.

But I think I’ve used the intrusive third person more in my spideypool fanfics, since Wade likes to break the fourth wall; to me, it makes sense for him to interact with the narration sometimes and for the narration to respond, even if only indirectly.

I think third-person narration works well in romance novels

I was sitting here thinking to myself that my preference for writing and reading in the third person is actually quite unusual when it comes to romance novels.

Because I see a lot of recommendations that say if you're writing fantasy, you should use the third person more to create a vivid world, but if you're writing a romance, you should use the first person more, it allows for a deeper emotional connection.

I love fantasy, so I thought that might be why I have this preference, but I really love reading contemporary romance all the time. So I thought maybe it’s because, as a teenager, I read a lot of YA romance and fantasy novels written in the first person, and that might be why they sometimes sound too juvenile to me now.

However, when I read books by authors who aren't just starting out, it doesn't sound juvenile. Maybe first-person narration sometimes seems easier, and many new authors start out with it.

But first-person narration, like other aspects of writing, is a skill, so you get better at it the more you study and practice. Perhaps it’s a skill I haven’t quite mastered yet, which is why I find third-person narration easier, even though I started out with first-person.

But I've noticed that chinese novels often use selective omniscient third-person narration with indirect speech, even in contemporary romance, that is, without any fantasy elements.

Besides the fact that I’ve read more fanfics with this type of narrative than first-person ones these days—perhaps because I read so many danmei fanfics, and the authors also tend to follow the same style as the original novel—maybe that’s what led me to develop this preference.

And when I say “preference,” it doesn’t mean I don’t read first-person stories—I read plenty of them and have even written a few myself—but I’ve realized I like more this type of narration.

I actually think it’s a great style for unreliable protagonist, because with first-person narration you already know things won’t be entirely objective, whereas a selective third-person perspective gives you a false impression of objectivity—I think that’s why it worked so well in danmei stories featuring protagonists with unreliable points of view.

Or maybe I love not feeling personally involved in the story, and the selective omniscient third-person perspective still allows me to distance myself from the character more than the first-person perspective does? Maybe. Also, I have a hard time with second-person, and I think that’s why. When I play a game, I love creating an OC; I don’t like using my own name, and that’s why Y/N fanfics weren’t really my thing.

But one thing I personally like about the first-person perspective is the pronouns. Since I write mostly about same gender couples—sapphic and achillean couples—using “he” and “she” can get complicated at times, so I have to use the characters’ names more often to make it easier.

A third-person observer narrative would be much more complicated for novels—I can see that. But an omniscient narrator using indirect speech very easily creates that emotional connection, which some people say is only possible with a first-person narrative.
