Any hot takes on The Last Jedi?
BOY DO I. Not sure if these are “hot takes” or more just “reasons I didn’t like the film” but here we are. This is all fully biased, and I’ll make sure to tag it as anti cause its not gonna be very nice. Also I’ve only seen the movie once so my memory is a little fuzzy. I’ll stick to highlights cause a full run down would be a freaking ESSAY. I’ll also put it below the cut so those who don’t want to don’t have to read.
The humor is awful. The movie starts with what is essentially a “yo mama” joke and just goes downhill from there. Luke throwing the lightsaber over his shoulder was just DUMB idk what R*an saw on the internet that made him think that would be funny in the actual movie is beyond me. Also there were a lot of moments that could have been heartfelt or moving and were ruined by bad humor (the “reach out” part comes to mind).
What was done with Finn and Poe’s characters, particularly Finn’s, IRKS me to no end. We didn’t get much of Poe in TFA but what we got showed that he was trusted highly by Leia and a respected leader. So you’re gonna tell me that someone of that caliber would be willing to lose the ENTIRE RESISTANCE BOMBING FLEET to take out ONE SHIP. Nah. And Finn, neither the character nor John Boyega deserved TLJ. Not only was his “I’m not here to fight” arc rehashed (we already went through that in TFA and he came out a HERO on the other side we didn’t need it again) but after that he was basically used as a joke and to make Rose look good and righteous (I liked Rose so that’s not hate towards her).
The absolute character assassination of Luke was just NO. Now I can understand Luke feeling like a failure and running away. I can understand him questioning the Jedi (actually liked that part cause the Jedi are dumb). But you will never convince me that Luke Skywalker, who THREW AWAY his lightsaber in ROJ rather than fight Vader and FREAKING PALPY, would consider murdering his nephew, the son of his sister and best friend, to the point where he was in Ben’s hut with his lightsaber ignited, because he saw that Ben was being manipulated by Snoke??? No. NEVER.
Also what a waste of Snoke??? I to this day for bad for JJ when it comes to ROS cause Johnson left him with so much clean up.
A waste of Captain Phasma too. She was so cool and definitely should have been kept around longer.
Hondo should at least told everyone PART of her plan. I get taking Poe down a peg but why make everyone think they were going to die???
The throne room lightsaber duel was bad. Idk what happened but either the fight choreo was bad or Adam and Daisy were off cause it just didn’t work.
I felt like the editing was choppy. There were too many story lines and, because there were too many, none of them got the depth they should have which contributed to the movie feeling half baked.
That was, a lot haha. I generally try to be really positive when it comes to star wars cause there’s so much toxicity in the fandom, but I’m really not a fan of this movie. Please SW fans don’t come for me if you like it that’s wonderful and you should continue to enjoy things.

thank you for consistently always making me feel better about my drafts
I’m glad my barrel-bottom-scraping organization abilities give everyone else an ego boost about their drafts. also i’m probably underestimating how long these drafts have been here. im sure some of them have been there over a year >__>
How good (or bad) is Cuthanon when it comes to flirting?
ask about my bastards
Cuthanon actually, after striding through the unforgiving gauntlet of teen-life-as-a-gay, used his grasp of emotional intelligence to actually become GREAT at flirting so sorry Din there’s no material here to use against him. Unless you count the awkward as fuck teen years, but you were too much of a baby then to remember so sucks to be you, Cuthanon as the older sibling has 200% of the power :)
maedhroswhy replied to your post: today’s topic: is nienor a cat person? Is morwen?...
well, Tuor definitely likes dogs, at least to the point where he got some of Lorgan’s to like him enough that they didn’t maul him when he escaped
I was halfway typing about how I love this trope where a person is made to sleep with the hunting dogs in order to humiliate or degrade them, but then they become friends with the dogs, and when they escape and their captors set the dogs on them the dogs just don’t attack
and then I remembered that aside from tuor I have only seen it one (1) other place and the escape part was just fanfic dsgvhdfhrfb
BUT IT SHOULD BE A TROPE
ncfan-1 replied to your post: today’s topic: is nienor a cat person? Is morwen?...
I think Turin is a cat person (Though he may like dogs just a little bit better).
Túrin is a literal cat, and everyone else in the CoH is a cat person

I wonder what their religion was like pre-only semi freely chosen cultural assimilation.
the best places for info about this are the Tale of Adanel and the Athrabeth (which i haven’t read closely in a while because in-universe religion isn’t one my my main Tolkien interests tbh) but maybe read/reread them if you haven’t recently! my interests run primarily to the Edain in Beleriand, so idk if there are any other significant sources about their past, but maybe someone else reading this knows? there’s also not a ton of evidence of Edain religious practices in Beleriand, and there are a few indications that they don’t actively worship the Valar or even think about them very much except as the elves’ gods, so i mostly headcanon the Edain as not really having a standardized or organized religion.
anyway i don’t have any detailed headcanons about this but @squirrelwrangler wrote an excellent fic about Edain history and religious-ish practices a while back, check it out if you haven’t already

always been afraid to say it, but I’ve been thinking this for quite a while...the elves seriously are not the center of the entire universe and the only people that matter, but it’s difficult actually convincing people of that
it sure is :/ and i know some people aren’t interested and it’s fine! i just wish that everyone who wanted to write about human/elf relationships put more effort into thinking about the human side of things. i love these relationships too but i have read some real dumb shit
vardasvapors replied to your post “god i just wish. there was a significant part of the fandom that was...”
I know I’m v preoccupied by interspecies stuff re tolkien and also don’t produce much edain-only content, but god the lack of edain-only or edain-centric content makes EVERYTHING else worse too imo. it especially bugs me when people interpret ‘more edain’ as ‘be woke-ly mean about elves in a totally elf-centric way while generically mentioning the edain’
my god andie why are you always so good at putting my deepest frustrations into words???? if someone’s take on the edain is entirely focused on how the elves ruined their culture, or they’re just the elves’ unwitting victims, or they’re only fighting because the elves manipulated/pressured them into it, i am not interested. the Edain have agency! they have private communities where they can express their own culture! they have their own lands and their own homes that they’ve lived in for generations and they view these places as theirs and they defend them because they want to remain there! elves and Edain fight and die alongside each other in Dorthonion during the Bragollach! the Edain have their own long-standing cultural and historical reasons to hate Morgoth - it’s not like they were safe from him before throwing their lot in with the elves! i’m not saying the elves were never ~problematic~ in this situations but my god i don’t think i’ve ever seen a discussion about elf-Edain relations where the elves were portrayed negatively that actually took the Edain’s canonical priorities into account.

Hah, yes! And I mean, early 2000s Tolkien fandom (aka movies fandom) was ... what it was. My deeply closeted teenage lesbian self was like, squinting at Orlando Bloom and just not getting it.
