Chapter 30
“Don’t worry about Novio,” he said. “He’s been nice lately—even to Dita, maybe especially—after what happened.”
Unless he wants to be labelled as a heartless monster, he’d better be fucking nice to people after Sam’s accident.
“How can I worry about that when you’re determined to risk your life up on the wire showing off? We have to do this now, get to the bottom of things, or you’re going to get hurt.” But I’m not in any danger. The scarf can’t hurt me. Nothing can.
Is this kind of “I’m untouchable” attitude that’s going to get her seriously hurt. I also love how Remy is quick to dismiss his own actions. Yes, he has a net, but I’m certain that the chance of serious injury is sky-high.
For example, the past week or so, I’d stopped trying so hard to find the culprit who was planting the objects.
It’s not exactly like they’d been doing much to try and find them before. We’re like ~60 pages from the end of book one, and so far they’ve…??? Talked to Kat about what happened 50 years ago. Julie talked to her grandma. And now they’re breaking into Thurston’s office in the hopes of uncovering more evidence. They’ve done literally three things.
“I can’t do this. It doesn’t matter how I feel about you. I can’t be with someone who lies to me. I won’t. I won’t let you turn us into them. I won’t be your fool. You are not invulnerable, no matter what your grandmother has convinced you.”
Ah yes, true love! I can’t even imagine breaking up with somebody over a goddamned old coin. Like give me a break.
Remy Garcia had broken up with me, and he knew all my secrets.
Chapter 30 summary: They break into Thurston’s office while he’s at a poker game with Novio and Remy’s dad. They spend way too much time yapping, and not enough time actually looking for evidence that Thurston could possibly be the one behind all of this. When they do find the letter, it’s basically Roman complaining that Nancy stole his good luck antique coin from him. Julie feels really guilty about the entire thing, and confesses to Remy. He gets angry… Unreasonably so, if you ask me. But I also feel like there’s a lot more going on than simply the fact that 50 years ago, her grandma stole a coin from his grandpa. Like that’s no fucking reason to break up with your girlfriend. Thurston comes back (again, because they spent too much time yapping at the start of the chapter). In a panic, the two of them kiss one another and make it seem like they’d snuck into his office to hook up without their families knowing. Remy play-acts as if Julie means nothing to him, but Thurston slams him and demands that he apologise, which he does. As Julie goes back to her RV, she goes slow in order for Remy to come and apologise for “breaking up” with her, or so that they could at least continue their conversation. She feels even shittier that he doesn’t.
Chapter 31
I ruined what we had. Me. He was right to be mad, right to break my heart.
Again, I feel like there’s something else going on with Remy. Because there’s no way that a normal guy would break up with his girlfriend over something that happened 50 years ago.
“The coin,” she said. “Roman was obsessed with it. You can’t just expect to use it with no consequences.” I didn’t breathe. “Do you want it back?” “Nothing is free,” she said. “The problem with success is it can become a form of blindness. You can’t see what you really want anymore.”
I’m still waiting for something really awful to happen to Julie. Mainly because she’s so convinced of the magic of the coin that she’s forgetting that there’s somebody out there intentionally psyching them out until somebody died.
“But someone out there does still want to hurt you. And if they can’t? They might try the ones close to you next.”
Horace the Dead Horse here to remind everybody that Julie was literally not even born when all of this got started. Whoever is doing this is holding onto a 50 year old grudge, and is taking it out on a literal 16 year old CHILD. They should probably be locked up in a psych ward, not performing stunts or whatever they do here.
“You’re never going to tell me the details of that summer, are you?” “Not if I don’t have to.” She turned back to the movie.
SOMEBODY HAS FUCKING DIED, BITCH. AND YOU DON’T EVEN GIVE A SHIT.
Too bad only I could be blamed for what had destroyed the chance of love between Remy and me.
Chapter 31 summary: Julie mopes around the next morning before she goes out and watches a movie with Nan. Halfway through it, Nan looks over to her and starts to say all of this shit about how the coin comes with a price. And that it’s not like it can protect her against her own stupidity, which I suppose is fair enough. However, Nan clams up the second Julie tries to ask what really happened 50 years ago, which I think is so fucking shitty. Her grandson (?) literally died, and she’s too stuck in the past to give a shit about anything but her own, ancient hurts. Julie leaves the RV, and runs into Dita. She’s been in deep mourning ever since Sam died, which is understandable. Julie tells her about the murder-board, and laments that they never told Sam. That he would have loved to take a crack at this. She then asks Dita about her grandmother, whom nobody ever talks about. Dita explains that her grandma hurt her back, and then OD’d on pills when Dita was little. However, Roman didn’t seem to give much of a shit about her death. Dita goes on to lament that not even her parents seem to like each other much. She feels blessed that she found true love with Sam, but is obviously still grieving his loss.
