In a world where the supernatural is the everyday norm, Mage Freddie Nieminen is doing his best to run a respectable business (easier said than done with a chaos demon and a necromancer as two of his closest friends). When a werewolf walks into Freddie's shop asking for help, however, thing start to get weird. Freddie hates dealing with werewolves (all those claws and teeth ripping out throats are a big turnoff). But Lincoln O'Connell is desperate. He's also willing to pay. Against his better judgement, Freddie makes an exception to his "no werewolves" rule... and finds himself in a bigger mess than he could have ever imagined. Someone seems to want Lincoln's entire pack dead, and it's up to Freddie and Lincoln to stop them. Can the best mage in Minneapolis live up to his reputation? More importantly, can he do it in time to save a whole town?

Every podcast I listen to has done an episode in the last six weeks about the summer at the Villa Diodati where Frankenstein and Dracula were first formulated, so all I can think when I see this is “The monster’s name was Lord Byron.”

TIL In 1926 the famous pianist Fats Waller (then 21) was kidnapped by Al Capone’s gang to play piano for his birthday. He basically went missing for 3 days and was returned unharmed but drunk.

5. What will be the first writing project you plan to focus on this new year?

Fic-wise I'm going to be finishing up the sequel to "In the Forests of the Night", which is "In What Distant Deeps or Skies" (Yes I'm being cliche and using titles from lines from William Blake's Tyger...)

For original stuff I'm probably going to do some more work on Who Fights Monsters, since I really love that one and want to finish the first short story in the collection soon!

You will not believe the amount of times I’ve read an English word and thought of a pronunciation and then continued to pronounce the word that way in my head for years only to discover that it has a completely different pronunciation and I would’ve made a fool of myself if I had ever pronounced that word out loud

It’s a phenomenon unofficially known as “reader’s accent” and it’s very common! Because English has so many words (in fact considered to be the language with the greatest number of words) lots of people, and in particular those who read a lot as children, will encounter a word in writing long before they hear it spoken. They’ll develop the idea of what the word will sound like in their head, and only realize when they hear it spoken that their idea was different than the common pronunciation. 

I’ve even had it where I’ve known words as spoken words, and I’ve known words as written words, and it’s taken me a significant amount of time to realize that they were the same word. One example I can think of is the word indictment. I always thought “indictment” was pronounced “in-dict-ment,” and it was only when all these police indictments started happening on the news (with the news crawls below the words being spoken) that I realized it was “in-DITE-ment.” 

So yeah, never feel bad for discovering that a word in English is pronounced differently than you would’ve expected. English has had influence from SO many other languages over the centuries as it developed, and as a result, many of our pronunciation “guidelines” are borrowed from the languages the words originally came from. It’s massively inconsistent, and it’s one of the reasons that learning English as a second language is so difficult. 

As my favorite poster in the campus writing center used to proclaim: 

“English: A language that lurks in dark alleyways, beats up other languages, and rifles through their pockets for spare vocabulary.”

What inspired you to create your favourite OC?

Was it another character somewhere along the way? Someone you knew in real life? Or did this character just come out of absolutely nowhere and bite you in the butt?

older lotr illustrations sometimes depict éowyn wearing ridiculously small armour. apart from the problem general sexualisation of the only female character (who really does anything), there’s another hilarious thought:

éowyn pretended to be dernhelm, a man. to fit in, she must have worn men’s armor. so the armor in the illustrations is normal for rohirrim.

therefore, all the rohirrim rode to war just like that:

so the rohirrim comment is probably not that far off

Frank Frazetta was the reason He-Man was designed like that; the producers conduct a study to see what art appeal the most to children, and Frank’s work came out on top in popularity. So everyone in He-Man is dressed the way they are directly because of Frazetta.

This book is everything! I’m still trying to find the words to review it properly, but Marske has nailed her debut and anyone who likes historical fantasy, magic and mystery, and characters to fall (and maybe die) for should add this to their TBR. (And the way Marske writes truly terrible people? And magical houses? Brilliant too.) I read it in two days and considered coming late to work just so I could finish it.

Rosh HaShanah: Happy New Year! It’s time to ask (and grant) forgiveness for the wrongs done in the past year, pledge to do better, and wish for a sweet new year. And go to synagogue for HOURS.

Yom Kippur: Rosh HaShanah’s somber counterpart. God decides on this day your fate for the next year. Repent your sins, hope for forgiveness, and fast. (And go to synagogue for HOURS.)

Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Sukkot: Harvest festival! Sleep in a hut under the stars.

Shemini Atzeret: Man, I don’t even know?

Shavuot: God gave us the Torah! That was pretty nice of him.

Chanukah: They busted up our temple and tried to forcibly convert us. We responded with guerilla warfare. Let’s eat some fried food. Candles!
