This is Esmerelda, she's a red gel ink pen. Today, she offered me a lesson. First, a bit of backstory. Most mornings, I begin my day with the ritual of writing. The ritual begins with divining the color of the day using the bag of pens. Eyes closed, I take a moment to ground and center, then reach into the bag. Swirling the pens in the bag, I feel for which one feels "right". This pen will set the color for the day and aid me in my morning scribbles. This morning, Esmerelda, the red pen, came forward as the vehicle for my ramblings. As I moved her tip across the page she spoke in fits and starts. Her ink flowing haphazardly. She was timid, the act of sharing her ink quickly exhausted her. I was a bit frustrated. I was trying to make marks to get my words out and she was not cooperating. I laid her down, stared into the sky and considered choosing another pen. A whisper - a knowing - entered my mind, "Don't give up on her, yet. What if she's just having a slow start? Sometimes, you have slow starts." I picked her back up and wrote a few words - her ink stronger at first… then fading. I set her down. "Maybe she needs a bit of rest... Maybe she's learning to use her voice again after a long silence." I sat in silence, musing on the idea of a pen being too tired for hee ink to flow. I thought about myself: my many starts and restarts - how the flow sometimes starts strong then tapers off unexpectedly. I told her that it was ok if her ink flowed smoothly for only a few words. That I would wait for her. I could practice patience. Together, we'd get through the writing ritual. On her terms. In her time. We began again… and this time her ink flowed freely without stutter or stumble until the writing ritual was complete. What do your tools teach you?
