"Tabi Tabi Po" is an art challenge I do every other year in the month of October where I draw my take on (hunky) Philippine mythological creatures.

"The Mangkukulam and the Mambabarang"

The Mangkukulam and the Mambabarang are both Filipino sorcerers in the Philippines. These Filipino sorcerers are well-known throughout the Philippines as it has many stories about them. However, the Mangkukulam and the Mambabarang are respectively different. The Mangkukulam (left side holding a voodoo doll) are witches who studied black magic, practiced voodoo, and performing rituals. This type of witches or sorcerers could cast evil spells on humans. People who wish to take revenge on someone or an enemy would search for the Mangkukulam. Mangkukulam is a powerful witch as most reports and cases of the victim died caused by the black magic performed by the bewitched Mangkukulam. However, it takes a price or any property after requesting of taking vengeance. Mambabarang (right side with insects) is that these witches or summoners use insects to enter the victim's body to anyone they hate. Despite they are similar to Mamkukulam. The Mambabarang are ordinary people who studied black magic to torture before death on the victim using their insects to infesting their whole bodies. It causes the victim some illness and unbearable pain when the Mambabarang uses their magical insects that they medium and communicate in targeting the victim. It doesn't need for exchange of property when a person requests on taking revenge. Despite the Mangkukulam and Mambabarang are still active in the Philippines, people tend to avoid them. Sometimes these witches are healers to the humans who are in aid for their magic from any illness. The Mangkukulam and Mambabarang are both ordinary humans who have studied black magic since centuries ago. They prefer to wear indigenous clothes, ritual accessories for protection, and voodoo dolls, or staff.

One thing that terrifies me about the aswang is that some can take a bamboo shoot and make it into a clone of you. So when they take you and kill you, there’s just something out there living your life, acting like everything’s normal, until the mimic gets sick and dies. Your family can’t even properly mourn you because their offerings aren’t even on your grave. It’s such a lonely way to die.

I love Philippine Cryptids, and I love color coordination. I have always liked the concept of urban people with cryptid ancestry - mingling with us like humans - coming to the city for food that nobody will mourn for, then flying back to their lavish condos and attend their elite schools as if no blood has been shed.

Why feast in the provinces with so little people? Come here in the city and try other flavors. The killers, the rapists, the perverts, the domestic abusers, the corrupt politicians, the homophobes, and the likes. Give their names, and let the cryptids handle it.
