Hello! Could you please show examples of taka shimada "wings" that explain if a geiko is jimae or not? Thanks a lot!
Geiko in Kyoto actually wear the “geiko shimada hairstyle”, which is very similar to the taka shimada hairstyle, but not quite the same. Missmyloko explains the differences perfectly in this post, accompanied by picures. Her blog is also where I got the translation for “nemaki” from.
Let’s start with dependent Geiko:

In this picture, you can see a silver paper tied around the base of the knot in Toshisumi’s geiko shimada hairstyle. There are also “wings” that potrude to the left and right. These wings are called nemaki (根巻き, tied (at the) root) and they symbolize that the respective Geiko is still dependent on her okiya. Once she becomes independent, they are cut off.

You can see part of the nemaki again, just from the other side.
Maiko Taka, Geiko Ichino and Geiko Ayano (Yamaguchi Okiya) of Pontocho getting into a taxi in November 2014. (Source)
In this picture, you get a good full backview of Ichino’s and Ayano’s nemaki; they really look a little bit like wings. Taka, Ichino and Ayano are all still active, by the way. Taka is a senior Maiko by now and Ichino and Ayano are independent now.
Now, let’s move on to jimae (independent) Geiko:

In these two pictures, you can see very well that the “wings” at each side of the knot are gone, and the silver paper is only simply wrapped around it.

The time a Geiko has to become independent varies from district to district, by the way. In Gion Kobu, they only have one year, in Pontocho they have two, in Gion Higashi and Kamishichiken, they have three, and in Miyagawacho, they have up to five years. Of course, they can also become independent before the time-limit is over, if they manage and want to. Geiko Katsuhina (Odamoto Okiya) of Gion Kobu only debuted in February of this year and became independent in June already!
