Team Leader | Last Stand | “It’s up to you now”

Gale looked back over his shoulder as he ran just behind Kolt down an alley. Behind them was a squad of people, some of them Powered. They were not the same people who had started chasing them three hours ago.

“New group,” Gale puffed. “They’re taking shifts.”

Kolt looked back to see for himself, and Gale was shocked to see actual fear there.

“Can’t we hide somewhere?” Gale asked, the stitch in his side making itself known. It was a stupid question, one that he shouldn’t have wasted his breath on. They’d already tried hiding in all of their favorite spots, but they’d been sniffed out just as quickly, no matter how good their tactics.

Kolt didn’t answer and Gale desperately asked, “The Dragon Gang?”

Kolt looked back, a familiar sort of pain. He hated asking for help, except for when it came to Gale. He especially hated asking the Dragon Gang and being indebted to Phoenix, no matter how friendly the guy was.

He changed their course subtly and Gale felt relief ease the pain in his side. They’d get somewhere safe. No matter how big the group chasing them was, they wouldn’t dare mess with Phoenix and his gang.

As they turned a corner, the group that had been chasing them earlier came into view, they shouted, pointing at Kolt and Gale.

The two were backed up against a building, no way out and not enough time to climb.

“Go,” Kolt said gruffly as their pursuers closed in. “Climb and get to Phoenix!”

“Kolt, no! I-”

“GO!” Kolt growled, shoving Gale against the wall. He swallowed hard and turned, grabbing onto the brick and looking up to plan his route.

He flinched as he heard a gunshot that ricocheted off of the wall above him, but the following screams proved that Kolt had his back, sending blasts of energy into the groups, holding them back as Gale climbed.

Gale pulled himself up over the wall and pulled out his pistol. He knew he only had three rounds left, but it would have to do.

He leaned over the wall, aiming and shooting the leader of one of the groups in the head.

“Climb!” he called to Kolt, but Kolt ignored him and kept fighting the two groups, backed up against the wall.

“KOLT!” Gale screamed, fear pounding in his chest.

Gale nearly fell off of the building as a something flew over head, catching and tearing the back of his jacket.

He rolled onto his back and shot at the creature. It wasn’t safe here, and he was out of ammo. He was exhausted and didn’t have any powers to his name. He would just have to trust that Kolt would find his way out of this. He was smart and he was one of the strongest Powered in the three cities.

Gale got to his feet and ran, heading in the direction of one of the Dragon Gang’s headquarters.

The flying creature didn’t come back for a round two with him, likely injured from the shots that Gale managed to land.

Gale reached a more spread out part of the city and quickly slid down a pipe to the bottom, turning and sprinting the last bit to the hotel the gang ran.

He pushed past the greeter and ran to the desk, panting as he gasped out, “Phoenix! I need Phoenix.”

The lady behind the desk gave him a wide eyed look, shaking her head in confusion, but the manager looked up sharply and called, “I’ll help you sir, follow me.”

Gale followed the man to a back room, still trying to catch his breath. He was so tired he couldn’t follow the blur of motion as he was pulled into the room, the door slammed closed as the manager put his arms through Gale’s and twisted him into an arm lock. He shouted in pain as someone else approached, patting him down and taking his empty guns from him.

“Who are you?” the manager growled into Gale’s ear.

“Gale. I’m with Kolt,” he gasped. He groaned as the manager twisted his arms further.

“I don’t believe you.”

“Please! We don’t have time for this! We were being chased by all of these people and he’s still out there! They’re going to-”

The other person, at some signal from the manager, pistol whipped him with his own gun.

He staggered, falling to his knees and holding his face as the manager let him go.

“We’re not doing anything until we verify who you are. Who can identify you?”

“Phoenix,” Gale said, pulling his hand away to look at the blood smeared on it. “Or his council. Anyone from the council.” It was too late. He was too late. Phoenix wasn’t going to get here soon enough or anyone from his council and Kolt was still out there, probably fighting or…. Or dead.

Gale got back to his feet, fighting a wave of nausea as pain rippled through his head. He tried to walk steadily to the door. “I have to go back,” he said, mostly to himself to keep himself focused through the pain and exhaustion. “He’s gonna get himself hurt.”

The manager made another move that Gale couldn’t keep up with and he was suddenly on his back on the ground, trying to get air back into his startled lungs.

“Tie him up,” the manager said to his assistant. “Don’t let him go anywhere until we figure out who this idiot is. Do you know how much of a breach of operations it is to have someone running around screaming to see Phoenix?”

“Yes sir.”

Gale was rolled over, his hands bound behind his back. He struggled weakly as his legs were tied at the ankles and knees, but it made no different as he was dragged to the corner and left there on his stomach as the assistant stepped out, turning out the lights and locking the door.

Gale lay in the darkness, blood trickling from the cut in his head, fighting the urge to fall asleep as he tried to get himself unbound.

He failed on both accounts.
