Peter hated mornings. Avery and Mulciber were the kind of horrible people that thought being gay was the worst possible insult. And James and Sirius were … James and Sirius.
All of this resulted in one morning in second-year, when Peter had fallen asleep on Remus’s shoulder during breakfast and Avery and Mulciber thought it was funny to laugh at how gay they looked. James and Sirius, of course, took this as their cue to announce the depth and beauty of Remus and Peter’s deep romantic love for each other to the entire school.
The four of them continued to bring it up for the next few weeks before it eventually faded to the background of everyone’s memories - except for the occasional instance Peter would ask for “some help with the potions homework, sweetheart”, or Remus would say, “can you pass the butter, babe?”. And, of course, the memorable Divination incident in fourth-year when James loudly described the seven kids he ‘saw’ them having together in great detail.
Apart from that, though, everyone had mostly forgotten about it, which was why there was great confusion when Sirius randomly challenged Peter to a duel in sixth-year in the middle of the Common Room.
“I can hold my silence no longer,” he proclaimed, brandishing his wand dramatically towards a bewildered Peter. “For many moons, I have waited in the wings, pining like a lonely maiden as I watched my beloved Moony with another. But I will stand for it no more, for you must know, Peter, that I have fallen in love with your betrothed. It pains me everyday to see him be yours, and it is for this reason that I challenge you to a duel so that I may win his heart and take him for a noble date in the charming village of Hogsmeade.”
“You couldn’t have just asked me out some normal way,” Remus muttered, blushing, as he pulled Sirius in for a kiss to the soundtrack of teasing cheers from the rest of the Common Room.
