Marcus Black: you’re ruining my work!
Thanks to @purrgiri for giving me the idea for this.
I'm Still Here
RWBY doesn't do 'found family' well at all.
I also really loved Treasure Planet and think the best Jim stand-in would be that lovable little misanthropic asshole Mercury. Of all of the characters who needed a good dad, he needed it the most.
Alternatively how Marcus Black died
Marcus: (Shot) AGH! (Falls over)
Tyrian: Tsk, tsk, tsk... You should've known better. Your son certainly did. (Glances)
Mercury: (Shivers)
Tyrian: Whether you kill the innocent or help the guilty, our goddess doesn't care. All she cares about is the one thing you tried to ruin; the most important aspect of her game...
Tyrian: EQUALITY.
Tyrian: We're all equal while we play her game. With her grace, we all share the same conditions. Some of us have lost and some of us are hated, so she gives us one last chance to fight back, fair and square.
Tyrian: But you broke that principle.
Marcus: Wait... NO-
Mercury: (Flinches, Shudders)
Tyrian: ...Good news, Mr. Black; it seems there's an open position for you that's only JUST become available~.

~somethings truly dont changed~
It was prom night at shade academy..one of the rarest nights where th3 creatures of grim wasnt attacking the academy. Course it helps that there's hardly no negative energy to attract either...
Which is surprising consindering only one was filled with inner turmoil...case in point professor Marcus black. Hes been observing the party all night making small notes
'Dawm...present...brnz or what's left...present...cfvy present ...sssn present..." hed continue to make mental notes of both transfers and none transfer. Its clear the fall of the previous academies had slightly shook him...as if he realized salem is coming and fast, his overthinking would continue until he heard laughter cut through like a sharp knife. His eyes darted to two male students specifically his son Marshall black and his loyal partner Anthony Kurosaki. Watching them dance and having fun made him think back to when he was young back when his lovely daliah flower was alive only key difference was; they danced gracefully matching the songs tone...meanwhile his son and Anthony were dancing. ...less gracefully almost desynched. This made Marcus chuckle softly amused "you look depressed" a voice said behind him. Marcus turned around unamused "Gordeau...figured you'd be dancing with Hilda or at least Chaos" this made gordeau snorted "please. Hilda is too..er..." he try to think of a nice way to describe her "not right in the head, as for chaos? Hes too bitchy to the point you'd think the guy's on his period or something " he leaned against the rail "so I was chilling in the back drinking" he teasing shook a beer bottle "saw mr lonely uphere watching all stoic so figure it roll on up to cheer up mr hotshot" he teased. Marcus scoff in a chuckle rolling his eyes accepting the beer "ha-ha" he said sarcastically, gordeau smirk mischievously like "heh im right aren't I though?" Marcus didnt answered, gordeau eyes then darted to their sons (anthony handing merc a headphone revealing why theyre out of synch) "ah.. thinking about daliah huh?" Which made Marcus growl and respond "daliah, salem, ozpin EVERYTHING. If it weren't for those two and the gods, everyone would be happy and daliah would be-" "marcus" gorduea interrupted by touching his shoulder "relax..We'll get back at her and avenge daliahs and Rodgers death..." he looked away Marcus looked at gordeau as his shoulders drop. The reaper glanced at the brunette before clearing his throat "until then lets have some fun relax let loose while the nights young" he clank their bottles together "I mean its not every night vacuo allows this to happen and say the grim isnt coming" gordeau does have a point whicb irritates Marcus alot which made him sigh and groan "fine,fine..guess one night won't hurt" he then chug down his beer and grunted finishing it which made gordeau cackle "hell yeah Marcus now that's how you let lose brother!!" Marcus groan already regrets this (but not really...)
Similarities Between Marcus' Semblance and All For One (AFO) Quirk
Marcus' Semblance (from RWBY) and All For One (AFO) Quirk (from My Hero Academia) both function as power-stealing abilities, allowing their users to deprive others of their unique supernatural traits—Semblances in RWBY and Quirks in MHA. At their core, they represent "Power Parasite" mechanics, where the user acts as a thief of innate abilities, often with permanent consequences for the victim. Here's a breakdown of key similarities:
Core Ability: Stealing Powers Both abilities enable the user to steal another person's power through some form of contact or condition. Marcus stole Mercury's Semblance, rendering him without it permanently. Similarly, AFO allows the user to steal Quirks by touch (via a hole in the palm), as seen when All For One stole Ragdoll's Quirk, leaving her Quirkless and disoriented. In both cases, the theft is depicted as a one-way extraction that benefits the thief at the victim's expense.
Permanence of Theft The effects are lasting and difficult (or impossible) to reverse. Marcus' theft of Mercury's Semblance persisted even after Marcus' death, with no known way to undo it. AFO's thefts are also permanent unless the user chooses to transfer the Quirk back or to someone else; for instance, stolen Quirks remain with the AFO user or their successor, and victims like Tenko Shimura (whose unformed Quirk was stolen as a baby) become Quirkless indefinitely. The document notes that not even Marcus' death restored Mercury's Semblance, mirroring how AFO's stolen Quirks don't revert upon the user's demise.
Victim Impact: Disorientation and Loss Victims experience immediate and long-term debilitation. Mercury was left weakened and compared his training without his Semblance to "a beating every day," implying physical and emotional trauma. AFO victims become disoriented and immobile for a short time post-theft, and if the Quirk is Mutant-type, they lose abnormal features (e.g., Ragdoll's dazed state). Both highlight the psychological toll: Mercury hated his father for the theft, while AFO victims like Yoichi Shigaraki regretted the power's misuse.
Philosophical or Training Justification The users rationalize theft as a means to build strength. Marcus claimed Semblances were "a crutch" that made people weak, stealing Mercury's to force him into harsh training without reliance on it. All For One (the character) echoes this by preferring straightforward Quirks and avoiding complex ones like Best Jeanist's Fiber Master, which require too much training. Both abilities tie into "Misery Builds Character," where the thief imposes suffering to supposedly forge resilience—Marcus trained Mercury as an assassin from birth, while All For One groomed Tomura Shigaraki with hatred to override limitations.
Transferability (Implied or Potential) There's ambiguity around giving powers back or to others. Marcus hinted he could return Mercury's Semblance when he was "strong," but never did, leaving it uncertain if he truly could. AFO explicitly allows transferring stolen Quirks to others (e.g., to Tomura or Nomus), but the document notes it's an inversion of One For All, emphasizing selfish hoarding over benevolent sharing.
Bad Powers, Bad People Trope Both are wielded by villainous, abusive figures. Marcus is described as a "vile" abusive parent and professional killer who stole from his own son. All For One (the Quirk and character) is used by a domineering villain who stole from family (e.g., his brother Yoichi) and others, creating mindless Nomus or sabotaging people like Lady Nagant with explosive Quirks.
Family Theme and Inheritance Familial ties play a role. Marcus and Mercury follow Roman god naming (Mars for war, Mercury for messenger), with Marcus training his son as an assassin. AFO involves family dynamics, like All For One stealing from his brother Yoichi, leading to One For All's creation, and passing the Quirk to Tomura (a groomed successor). Both involve parent-child or sibling exploitation.
Theft Mechanism: Marcus' Semblance - Unknown conditions (implied contact or proximity); AFO Quirk - Touch via palm hole, with red energy streams
Permanence: Marcus' Semblance - Endures post-death, no reversal known; AFO Quirk - Permanent unless transferred; vestiges persist in mental realm
Victim Effect: Marcus' Semblance - Loss of Semblance, physical/mental trauma; AFO Quirk - Quirkless state, disorientation, loss of mutant features
User Philosophy: Marcus' Semblance - Semblances as crutches; misery builds strength; AFO Quirk - Quirks for selfish gain; combines for devastation
Differences Between Marcus' Semblance and All For One (AFO) Quirk
While both are power-stealing abilities, they diverge significantly in scope, mechanics, limitations, and narrative depth. Marcus' Semblance is sparsely detailed (never shown in action, revealed via flashback), emphasizing permanence and personal abuse. AFO is a multifaceted Quirk with extensive rules, weaknesses, and world-building implications, including mental vestiges and global domination potential.
Scope and Versatility Marcus' Semblance appears limited to stealing Semblances without evidence of using or combining them. He stole Mercury's but never returned or transferred it, and it's unclear if he could wield stolen ones himself. AFO is far more versatile: the user can steal, store, wield multiple Quirks simultaneously, combine them for ultimate moves (e.g., All For One's random array attacks), transfer them to others (e.g., to Nomus or Tomura), and even duplicate the Quirk itself (as done for Tomura). It can steal unformed Quirk Factors (like Tenko's as a baby) and blend Quirks into new ones (e.g., creating One For All).
Reversibility and Transfer Marcus' theft is implied irreversible—effects remained after his death, and his promise to return Mercury's was likely a lie. There's no confirmed ability to give back or transfer Semblances. AFO allows full transfer: users can give stolen Quirks to others (e.g., empowering Nomus), and the Quirk itself was duplicated and passed to Tomura. However, it can't destroy held Quirks (e.g., New Order revolted internally), and transfers require complex processes for some recipients.
Weaknesses and Limitations Marcus' Semblance has few explicit weaknesses beyond its unknown conditions, but its permanence is a double-edged sword (no undo even post-death). AFO has numerous drawbacks:
Body Strain: Recipients may become mindless if unable to handle multiple Quirks (e.g., Nomus or Spinner's unhinged state). Tomura's incomplete body tore apart at 75% power.
Anti-Theft Protections: Can't steal One For All without consent or overwhelming hatred (Tomura's grooming overrode this).
Vestige Rebellion: Stolen Quirks retain consciousness (vestiges), leading to mental links, rebellions (e.g., against All For One's duplicate), or takeovers (All For One possessing Tomura).
User Dependency: Effectiveness depends on the user's skill (prefers simple Quirks); injuries reduce power (e.g., All For One's post-All Might wounds). Nine's weaker version limited him to 8 Quirks and worsened cellular degeneration.
No Destruction: Can't eliminate harmful Quirks once stolen (e.g., New Order's self-destruction).
Activation and Range Marcus' method is unknown but implied personal (stole from his son during training). AFO requires contact (touch range), emits energy streams, and can be discreet. It can't steal via unleashed Quirks (e.g., not by touching flames) and needs hands (limb loss disables it).
Narrative Role and Usage Marcus' Semblance is a posthumous character trait, shown in flashback to explain Mercury's backstory and recruitment by Cinder. It's tied to personal abuse and assassination training. AFO drives major plotlines: All For One used it for domination, creating Nomus, sabotaging heroes (e.g., Lady Nagant's explosion), and global catastrophe plans. It includes mental worlds (vestiges), interconnections with One For All, and evolutions like Tomura's hatred overriding limits or Quirk Singularity (uncontrolled growth).
World-Building Impact In RWBY, Semblances are unique soul expressions; Marcus' theft is rare and villainous but not world-altering. In MHA, AFO shaped society—All For One ruled Japan from shadows, stole for favors, and aimed for Quirk-dependent world control. It contrasts One For All's altruism, with philosophical inversions (selfish hoarding vs. communal power).
User Background and Morality Marcus was an alcoholic abusive parent and assassin, killed by his son. All For One (the character) is a century-old villain who manifested AFO at birth (stealing his mother's life force), empowered villains, and possessed successors. Variants like Nine's (limited to 8 Quirks) or Tomura's (with mental takeovers) add layers absent in Marcus.
Versatility: Marcus' Semblance - Steal only; no confirmed use/combination; AFO Quirk - Steal, use, combine, transfer, duplicate
Reversibility: Marcus' Semblance - Irreversible, even post-death; AFO Quirk - Reversible via transfer; but vestiges persist
Weaknesses: Marcus' Semblance - Unknown method; permanent lock; AFO Quirk - Body strain, vestige rebellion, can't steal OFA easily
Narrative Depth: Marcus' Semblance - Backstory element for Mercury; AFO Quirk - Central to MHA lore, with mental realms and evolutions
In summary, both abilities embody theft of personal power for control and abuse, but Marcus' Semblance is a straightforward, unyielding parasite with limited exploration, while AFO is a complex, evolving system with strategic depth, societal ramifications, and inherent risks that make it a narrative powerhouse.
