Marpessa Dawn (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, EUA, 3 de janeiro de 1934 - Paris, França, 25 de agosto de 2008) foi uma atriz norte-americana, que ficou famosa por contracenar com Breno Mello no filme "Orfeu Negro", de Marcel Camus, filme este onde Marpessa fez o papel de Eurídice. Desde jovem, Marpessa radicou-se na França, onde conheceu Camus. Seu último filme foi "Sept en attente" (1995), de Françoise Etchegaray. If you’ve already heard of her it's likely because of her role as #Eurydice in the 1959 Brazilian film Orfeu Negro (#BlackOrpheus), which received the Cannes Palmes d'Or award in 1959 and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1960. Reviewing the film for The New York Times in 1959, Bosley Crowther wrote that Ms. Dawn conveys “forthright emotion.” “A pretty, frank face and a gentle manner that suggest absolute innocence,” the review continued, “gather an aura of wistfulness about her that filters down into a melancholy mood.” But few people know that Dawn, who was African-American and Filipino, moved to France in 1953 and lived here until her death in 2008. She won the role of Eurydice at the age of 24. #BlackEurydice Born in America #MarpessaDawn migrated to Europe when just a teenager, first dancing in revues then stage acting and television in England. In 1953 Marpessa relocated to France and at the age of twenty-four landed the role for which she is most remembered that of Eurydice in the film #BlackOrpheus (#OrfeuNegro) which won the 1960 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is a modernized version of the Greek poet Ovid’s poetic #Metamorphoses or #Orpheus and #Eurydice.
