No. 36 Marrella

Marrella was a small (~1cm) species of arthropod alive in the ancient Cambrian ocean.

Also known as lace crabs, marrella was formerly thought to be a type of trilobite. Today it is classified within its own group the marrellomorphs. These animals are now thought to be early members of the mandibulates – the arthropod group including all insects, crustaceans and myriapods.

Marrella likely fed by filtering seawater with its back legs as it swam, passing food to its mouth beneath the head shield.
