Marvel Universe AU Bio #1 - Iron Man

I've always loved the attempts by other fans to Streamline and redesign the backstories of Marvel characters to make them less complex so I thought I'd take my own try at it. And who better to start with than the Iron Man himself?

Tony Stark grew up in New York, raised by his father, famous industrialist and inventor Howard Stark, after his mother died a few years after his birth. While Howard and Tony bonded over their shared brilliance and love of inventing, Howard often worried about his sons arrogance and his unwillingness to truly apply his genius to helping people. He also feared that Tony kept too much distance from others, his only close relationships being with Howard, Jarvis, the family butler, and James Rhodes, the son of Howards personal attorney. So when Tony was 13, rather than continuing his homeschooling, Howard applied for Tony to attend the Tomorrow Academy, a special school for up and coming young geniuses. It was here that Tony made a genuine connection with another genius student: Hank Pym. He and Tony would often spend immense amounts of time talking science and technology and even working on projects together.

The next three years of Tony's life were great until one day his father left on an important "business trip" (in reality a meeting of numerous scientists who worked for the international peacekeeping organization SHIELD) and perished when the plane he was flying in crashed. Consumed by his grief, Tony dropped out of school and went to work running his fathers company. Unfortunately, Tony was influenced by his father's partner and his legal guardian, Obadiah Stane, who manipulated the grieving Stark into undoing Howards decision to downsize the companies weapons manufacturing business. Over the next 11 years Tony became a ruthless businessman and person as well as drowning himself in numerouses vices such as alcohol, women, and luxury vehicles all in a futile attempt to numb himself both to the loss of his father and to the misgivings he'd started having about his the decisions he was making. During this time Tony ended up damaging a number of personal relationships including his friendship with Hank Pym after attempting to weaponize one of their childhood projects.

But Tony's whole world changed when he was kidnapped by an organization known as The Ten Rings during one of his weapons demonstrations. In the struggle to capture him, his heart was damaged by shrapnel from an explosive, but he was given emergency medical care by another captured scientist named Yinsen, who manged to construct a makeshift Pacemaker for him. At first, The Ten Rings members interrogated Tony for the location of an item left to him by his late father, but when he refused to give them the information, he was put to work building weapons for them along with Yinsen.

Unbeknownst to the Ten Rings, Tony had already started planning his escape. First he made modifications to the pacemaker Yinsen had made for him to make it more efficient, including designing a miniaturized version of his fathers Arc Reactor to power it, then he and Yinsen began using the materials provided to them to construct a special weaponized suit based on some robotics designs Tony had created in his youth. By the time it was complete, their captors had realized they were up to something and Yinsen sacrificed himself to give Tony the time needed for his suit to activate. Using his armor, Tony got away from his captors and reached civilization where he contacted his old friend turned Air Force Pilot, James Rhodes.

As he returned home, Tony couldn't stop thinking about how the Ten Rings had possessed so many weapons developed by his own company. He recalled how his father had told him he'd moved away from building weapons the day he was born in hopes of setting a better example for son. So, Tony decided to make an even more ambitious move than his father and completely shut down Stark International's weapons production. He worked to move his company towards focusing on renewable energy and his fathers Ark Reactor technology until one day he heard news that the Ten Rings had been engaged in more attacks and were armed with more Stark Weapons.

Enraged that his technology was being used this way , Tony set to work designing a more advanced version of the armor he'd used to escape and, under the guise of employee investigating illegal use of Stark technology, went and stopped the attack. With Rhodes, now Starks liason to the military, and Pepper Potts, a former SHIELD agent now head of Stark Security, acting as his mission control, "Iron Man" set out on his mission to stop anyone from using his technology for evil.
